Oil In Plug Holes

Recommended Posts

CaptainP

Hi all,

Having a bit of trouble with the CTi with the occasional misfire. I removed the spark plugs from the 2 plugholes nearest to the Distributor (not sure what numbers you would call them, either 3&4 or 1&2 depends which side Peugeot number them from?) and they have oil in them. The spark plugs look like they have been dipped in the oil can, they were literally dropping with oil. I'm wondering if valve guide oil seals would cause this or would it more than likely be a HG failure?

Thanks for any advice.

Steve

Which bit was dripping with oil? The section inside the engine? Or the porcelain bit that the ht lead covers?

The section inside the engine.

Are you sure the oil hasn't run down the plugs when you removed them?

I had the same issue last year, car had an intermittent misfire which gradually developed and ended with running on 2 cylinders and black smoke from the exhaust.

At first I was sure it was the ignition amp... but checked the plugs anyway, first one was black with soot, 2nd one came out like you say dipped in an oil can, looking carefully at the 3rd one before I removed it I spotted oil in the plug bore, pulled the plug out and it too came out covered in oil, 4th plug was like the first, sooty.

Cleaned the plug bores and plugs then refitted, at the same time (stupidly) I changed the ignition amp which I suspected was faulty... but the engine has been fine ever since, misfire cured. I bought some paste the other day so I'll get round to changing the old amp back just to check that it was the oil that caused the misfire by creeping up the plugs into the caps. Where the oil came from I still don't know but obviously through gravity... rocker cover gasket?
