What Is The Difference Between 205Gti Rack And Non Gti?

I need a new LHD rack for my trials car which as far as I know uses a rack from a non GTI 205 but I have no idea what model it came from. It was purchased by a friend from a scrapyard in France. The GTI rack is a lot more expensive and I just wondered what the difference is. The second question which is the more important of the two are are all racks from 87ish non GTIs the same? Any guidance here will be much appreciated. Thank you.

As far as I know, GTI and non-GTI non-power steering racks are the same.

 

There are however two styles of pinion coupling, the earlier is a splined type and in my experience is used up to somewhere around late 1989. The later type is a square type from 1990-onwards. It is very obvious which is which by looking at them.

base models also had a bush in the lower column where the gti was a direct steel shaft, directly interchangeable though.

Yes. Approx 3.2 turns for a 205/309 PAS rack and 3.9 turns for a 205/309 non-PAS rack.

Am I right in thinking there are two types of pas rack, one with a ram bolted to the side and one which is all internal?

No, all the PAS racks have the ram externally on 205/309/306/ZX/Xsara models.
