Bilstein B6 With Standard Springs?

Recommended Posts

Rob Thomson

Hello,

I'm planning a front suspension overhaul in the near future and am wondering about swapping the front struts to Bilstein B6s. All the threads on here refer to using these with Eibach -30mm springs, but I want to retain the standard ride height and spring rate. I wonder if anyone has any experience with this set-up?

There's a couple of reasons for wanting to do this. Firstly, I like the sound of the monotube Billies, and the front currently feels slightly under-damped so this seems like a sensible upgrade. And the car's currently running ~2,000 mile old genuine Peugeot struts - it seems a shame to 'waste' them bouncing down the local lanes.

The car is (or will be) used for a mix of road/track/sprint/autosolo.

Cheers, Rob.

Aren't the standard dampers monotube too?

Not sure on B6, but DCC has the Inverted Challenge/B8 dampers with Faulkner 106 155 lb springs which give a near standard ride height.

tbh, bouncing down the local lanes is exactly what the standard peugeot dampers were made for :D

B6's work fine with standard springs - I ran one of my old 205's like that for a while and it was a nice setup :)

My 205 GTi-6 is currently on Bilstein Challenge and standard 309 GTi springs, and that works well enough, just spoilt by the silly boat anchor under the bonnet making it feel a little inert.

Are you sure about it being near standard height? Only pictures I've seen it looks a fair bit lower than standard with those springs, more like 30mm or so down. That would make sense seeing as on 106's they seem to sit similar height to Eibach's etc.

Not silly low and I'm tempted to get a set myself, but certainly doesn't look near standard height!

not sure how old that pic is Anthony, its on standard wheels again, I'll get Dan to measure arch to wheel centres, it was particularly low before that, possibly on ventura 50mm springs?

maybe "nearer" standard than before would have been better wording

That's from his project thread on the drive around Baja after fitting the Kamracing 106 springs.

Looks a similar height in a later picture with it back on standard wheels, just the one above showed the height clearer.

It was silly low before though, so I don't doubt it's sat considerably higher than it was... but yes, nearer not near!

The B6 damper is a standard length unit so should work fine with the standard springs. Its about 30% uprated vs the standard unit. It might resist the weight of the car a bit more so its possible there will be a little variation in ride height.

Around 100 Lb rings a bell.

I'm far too much of snob for the B4s... but they do look ridiculously good value. Hmmm.

I presume the B4/B6s are both compatible with the standard top-mounts?

Batfink, do you have a discount code for your website?

Cheers, Rob.

I wouldn't have thought the B4's will feel much different to what you have now?

B4, B6 and Challenge will all work with standard top mounts.

I use Gti6 b4 with 205 eibach pro kit, definitely a massive improvement on the old dampers if anything it's a tad stiff for my liking. But then I use mine for pootling across the country side.

i dont have a blanket discount code as some stuff is rock bottom. I'd have to see what I can do on the bilstein bits.
