I'm going to drop it in to engine resource in Dundee, haven't used them personally but their name has cropped up repeatedly when enquiring about engine services north of the border.

I'm convinced my situation is a stuffed lifter but I am getting the valves and valve guides checked as a matter of course. The guides are a worrying point for me as they are not listed as being checked on the receipt from when the engine was away at Gardias engine services getting work done. This might not necessarily mean they haven't been checked but I can't be sure.

If it ends up they were overlooked while away and do turn out to be worn then it means not only will they need replacing but the valve seats will need re-doing too. A load of money down the pisser if that is the case!

Sorry for straying slightly off topic just wanted to put across that I, like you, haven't had the best of luck with changing engines haha :D

going to back to your first post, why do you suspect you've bent an inlet valve? I assume you had issues replacing the belt?

Yeah i made a boo boo when doing the belt. I put an 8v pulley on but didn't realise until i tried to turn it over by hand that the pulley wasn't seated correctly in the woodruff key. Turning by hand came to an abrupt halt and i must have used too much muscle before i realised something wasn't right.

After going round the engine now and listening closely i actually think it's an exhaust valve on the 2nd cylinder closest to timing belt.

I know, a costly schoolboy error!

I've just taken on my old man's white 205 gti6 which has the exact same tapping.

Planning to get another head and build it up with new valves and possibly some cams etc. Whereabouts in Glasgow are you DB, think you were at one of our TT meets ar Eurocentral previously?

Yeah i was, white 205. I'm from sunny Carluke, the centre of the universe!

I might have a spare head if you struggle to find one.

Greater Glasgow then :)

I can get the boss at work to give you a quote for the head work if you like (I'm off on holiday for 2 weeks next weekend) sure we could fit it in soon though. Not sure on rules for advertising etc but ping me a pm if you'd like some details. We're in Linwood.

Took my car to an old mechanic i know (to sort my tracking as the young dude who done it last week with old guages made an arse of )

Anyway, he had a good listen to the engine and also exhaust, and said if he was betting he'd say it was a dodgy lifter. He thinks the engine runs too sweet to have a bent valve and said you would probably hear a slight miss now and again if there was a dodgy valve.

So tonight i put in Wynns hydraulic lifter treatment and clocked up 20 miles or so, but don't notice any difference yet.

Here's hoping.

How long does these wonder treatments usually take to work?

gti6's don't tend to miss even with a bent valve, double springs and thin stems see.

I'd personally rag the crap out of this engine and do the headgasket/prep work on the other engine just incase.

Dr pepper what's the worst......

I've used a similar treatment on my MX-5 (which are prone to having bad lifters). It didn't take more than 20 miles set to cure the noise.

Frankly, I think the noise in your video is way too loud to be a bad lifter (especially if the noise doesn't change during warming up).

As others already mentioned, I wouldn't worry about head gaskets a lot. The engine comes with what is considered a "high-performance-item" as standard fitting.

After half a million kilometres with several of these engines in various specs and cars, the head gasket never failed.

aren't you meant to dump the oil after 30mins with the treatment stuff? afaik it helps to decoke and get rid of any sludge in the lifters. I certainly wouldn't be driving it far.

Na Dcc, this type is an additive. You dump the flush types.

think about it though, its a compound which is intended to thin and break down 'clogged lifters' - to me that's going to affect the properties of the oil itself. your car, your engine, but for the sake of £20 for new oil and filter, I'd be dumping it.

I don't think so DCC, it's not like an oil flush/oil thinner that thins oil/tar etc.

I imagine it's some sort of friction reducer or something?

If i thought it was detrimental to the oil i'd have put cheaper oil in before putting the additive in as my oil was about £50 and hasn't done many miles.

Hi dobboy did you get to the bottom of this? I've dropped a replacement engine in my car and I think I have the same issue.... :(

99% sure i bent a valve. My spare (complete) head is in getting skimmed/checked over and i'm just gonna swap the head over when i get a chance.

Get some miles on yours before resigned to the fact its a tapper as my last engine sounded a little bit similar but the sound eventually disappeared.

Thanks for the reply. Good shout it's pretty much been sat in the garage since we put it in so I'll cross my fingers and take it for a run!
