Rear Beam Rubber Seal Replacement

Recommended Posts

Motorsport Artist

Hi all,

Can anyone help me with a good way of fitting new rubber seals to the end of the cross beam please? These are the black seals cover the outer bearings. I have managed to distort two of these seals so far. The first one I tried hitting in with a soft mallet. NO! The second I fitted a large socket over the top so that it rested on the metal collar under the rubber but still managed to distort it, again by trying to knock it in by hitting the socket with a soft mallet. I can get the seal in most of the way without difficulty but don't seem to able to knock it in so it fully seats against the brass collar. (The outer bearing is properly recessed by the way). Any assistance on this one wold be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Should just be able to tap it in using the palm of your hand - shouldn't need a hammer!

Depending how far you've tapped the outer brass coloured collar on, the seal won't sit in all the way and might still have a couple of the "ribs" showing. As long as it's tapped home as far as it'll go so that it's bottomed out against the end of the tube, it'll be fine.

Thanks Anthony, Appreciate the quick response. I think from what you've said I've knocked the brass collars right down as far as it will go so in actual fact when I fitted the seal it was in fact down as far as it could go and I've then damaged it by trying to force it further. I assume there's no problem with this or should I lift the brass collars a fraction before fitting the replacement seals?

the steel sleeve should be 2mm clear of being fully home.

As above, it shouldn't be fully home, but in reality it'll be fine if you've already knocked it all the way in.
