Oil Temp/pressure Wire

Recommended Posts

dobboy

Since putting another engine in my oil temp and oil pressure gauges are not right.

I'm pretty sure i've mixed the two wires up, which can only be at the sensors themselves. It's one thing i didn't check as i thought it was a given which wire was which by the way the loom lay.... obviously and frustratingly not. (i'm using the little adapter with press sensor on side, temp sensor on the end)

Anyway, it's a radiator out jobby to swap the wires over due to the angle my pressure switch sits at as i can't access it from underneath or above, and i can't reach in to get the wire off to flash it.

However, just want to make sure.

I got the wire that i've currently got going to the temp sensor off and flashed it to earth, the oil low press light, stop light, (and surprisingly to me) the coolant high temp light lit up on the dash.

Anyone know 100% if that is my oil pressure wire?

Oil pressure switch wire will light up the low oil pressure, STOP and high coolant temp light when grounded.

The other sensor next to it will be the oil pressure gauge, not the oil temp - ground that and the gauge will read max.

Oil temp is on the sump - again, ground that and the gauge will read max.

take the inlet off not the rad.

If you remove the oil filter, you should be able to get at it from underneath easily enough.

Either that, or employ a child to reach through the inlet manifold runners if you removed the resonator box.

Other option is that you could cheat and swap the two wires over on the brown multiplug under the dash.

take the inlet off not the rad.

This, far easier.

Thanks all, removing rad seems easier to me, and i'm gonna replace coolant anyway.

The old 8v temp sender is plunked in the back of the adapter.

Kicking myself for not checking these out before buttoning it all up.

I think you've gotten mixed up, as Anthony said the temp sensor should be in the sump. The adaptor you have on the front face of the block beneath the inlet manifold should house the oil pressure sender and the oil pressure/stop light switch. So grounding one will bring the stop light/oil pressure light/coolant high temp lights on, whilst grounding the other will cause the oil pressure gauge to read maximum.

Grounding the one in the sump will cause the oil temp gauge to read maximum.

Thanks Sam, you're right i am mixed up.

I thought i only had two sensors associated with oil, the two on the adapter, which i thought were oil pressure and oil temp.

On my adapter there's the big barrel type thing, is that one the actual pressure switch?

I pulled the wire from the smaller one of the two on the adapter and that wire made the dash lights come on. (I take it this is the actual gauge sender?)

I had all this sussed out when doing my conversion, obviously had too much beer since.

No, its the other way around, the much larger one is the pressure gauge sender, the smaller is stop light.

See here; http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?showtopic=66263

So it sounds like you have them wired correctly, since you removed the wire from the small one and when grounded it brought the warning lights on.

Sam, well i think my gauge sender might be goosed. It doesn't do much, but it did go full scale for a second or two initially.

What are the gauges actually doing to make you think there's a problem?

What you've just said sounds like what the oil level sensor does iirc?

Do you mean you earthed the pressure sender wire to the block and the gauge went to maximum for a second then dropped off again?

If so then that means there is a break in the wiring somewhere between the sender and the dash gauge, possibly a pin pushed out of the brown multiplugs since you've presumably had them apart a few times lately.

Sam, no, the first time i started the car initially the oil pressure gauge went full scale and then dropped low and hasnt moved since.

Have you got same layout as me dobboy? Miles' oil pressure extension with hole in the side for the oil pressure sender

The oil temp one moves but pressure gauge doesn't, which made me think i might have the two wires crossed.

if you earth the oil pressure switch wire the stop light and oil and water temp warning lights should come on

if you earth the oil pressure guage wire the pressure guage should read maximum.

if the oil pressure guage reads anything less than maximum when you earth it out the wire has high resistance (corroded) and needs replacing

obviously if it reads nothing at all its bust or not connected lol

Yeah similar Slo, except i used both the 8v sensors. My oil press switch is just single spade, and i done my loom to work like that.

You've got less room than me! Need to take 20 bits off to get to one lol

Got it now. But i can't even get in to try earth the pressure gauge sender wire to make sure wire away from it is ok, which i'm sure is/will be.

I use both 8v sensors now too. I originally had the turbo oil pressure switch as in the picture but the light never came on so assumed it had died and changed it to the 8v one but on removing it discovered a lump of crap had blocked up its hole and due to the amount of part needed to remove to get to it (as you kindly pointed out lol) I just used the old faithful 8v one anyway.

Oh btw Sam, i fitted the multiplug from the gti6 chassis leg onto my 205 car loom, (its fitted near washer bottle). All i have to do is plug the big plug from the gti6 loom into it.

It's a great idea, it allowed me to remove and refit engine with the loom all wired up, then all i had to do was plug it in.

Thats how they are originally isnt it? Turbos are anyway and they are the same block.

Do you remember which colour wire went to which sensor? If so can you earth if from the brown plug on your chassis leg to help isolate where problem is?

Na Matt, i can't remember, but yeah i could prove from plug to dash. I took note of all the pins etc
