Can anyone tell me if the 6 speed hdi gearbox is hydraulic clutch or cable ? Also if its hydraulic can it be converted to cable ? Thanks

Mine is hydraulic & I believe they all are.

No idea if they could be converted to cable though but I'd expect as with most things if you are willing to do the work required you could make it cable operated.

yep, they're all hydraulic, it would be better to convert the car to hydro than the box to cable.

theyre also cable operated shifting which isnt hard to retrofit into most vehicles using the original cables.

Ok so has anyone ever done this ? What pedal box works best etc ?

depends what its going in, but in most cases its making things fit rather than using a different pedal box.

How is the clutch activated on the hydraulic box ?

a slave cylinder operates the release fork, exactly the same as a cable operated clutch.

not quite exactly the same, but a similar principle.

one thing you do need to consider with the 6 speed ML boxes is that they are from vehicles with quite large overall wheel sizes compared to a 205, so they don't actually have gearing that tall comparatively, probably better off with something 5 speed from an older vehicle where the difference in wheel size is much smaller.

I have a 5 speed off a 405 at the moment looked at 5 speed hdi im liking the idea of cable selectors rather than crappy oe Peugeot linkages its on a xud9te I may add

ML 5 speed doesn't fit in a 309 it fouls on lock, luckily my MOT man is kind as thats a fail.

Surely a 6 speed diesel box will be horid ratios.

if its just the cable shift you want then you dont need to use an ML gearbox, you can find a lot of the parts you need bolted to a be box.

as for the "crappy o.e linkages" just replace them, they werent crappy 20 years ago!

Yeah I was going to rose joint the linkages to be fair so you think 6 speed is a waste of time ?

This. The linkage setup in good condition is fantastic - so precise and a joy to use. Admittedly it's not quite MX5 rifle-bolt like, but frankly it's closer than a 30 year old design mass-produced hatchback has any right to be.

The problem is that most 205's have loads of wear and slop to the point that most people believe that a vague, imprecise and sloppy change is perfectly normal and how they should be. It really isn't.

Cable changes always feel a little rubbery and artificial to me compared to a well-sorted mechanical linkage setup.

I totally agree but I cant find good quality replacement linkages all the ones I have had haven't lasted. In fairness thats probably due to the 30k miles I put on it in a year :/

I'm just running a set of Miles/Pugracing rods and a set of GTI6BOY bronze linkage bushes and it's been like that for a few years.

Usually sloppy change issues aren't the linkage rods themselves but the pivot bushes being worn, the clamp bolt loose, or the ball on the subframe being loose. The white plastic guide bush can deteriorate and wear too.
