Power Steering Rack Question.

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

my Miami 1.6 apparently had power steering fitted that was taken out by a previous owner to 'feel more of the road' and I've recently sourced the correct parts to retro fit it all back in again, now the only thing I don't have is the PAS steering rack... What's the chances that this was changed for a non-PAS rack? Also, is there a quick way to check if the correct rack is still in there or even if my car had power steering to begin with?

Thanks in advance.

look for hydraulic fittings on the pinion and studs or remains of studs for fitting the ram.

Quick way to check is how many turns you have lock to lock - a PAS rack would have about 3.2 and a NON PAS would be about 3.7.

That isn't conclusive though since the previous owner may have removed the PAS ram from the 3.2 turn rack.

Either way it would be easy to get a replacement PAS rack since its the same as the 306/xsara/ZX and maybe a few others.

Exactly the same, including the steering arms??

No they're not exactly the same - UJ fitting is different and the arms are different compared to the 205 PAS rack.

However, the UJ options are the same as the Xsara VTS and the arms can be easily enough swapped for 205/309 ones.

Did 1.6's ever actually come with PAS. Maybe in 1992 it was a dealer fit option.

PAS was an option on both 1.6 and 1.9 Henry.
