Identifying Cam

Recommended Posts

Evening all,

Acquired a 'new' 1.9 GTI engine a couple of months ago, was informed it had some sort of upgraded camshaft installed along with double valve springs. I can't find any information anywhere on the cam itself. My uncle (Engine is stored at his house, I have a very understanding family!) has just measured it for me at 270° duration on the inlet side with 9.7mm or 0.382in lift. Can't tell if it's symmetrical or not.

The lift seems to match the standard lift quoted here http://www.205gtidrivers.com/info/techspecs.html but not the duration. Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

Check the end for markings.

Checked both ends, nothing on either - I have a Piper in another engine with the markings on the end so that was the first place I looked - another thing that's making me wonder if it's a standard cam!

382 thou isn't much lift for a 1.9. Are you sure that's correct?

Could it be a late DKZ motronic/cat cam? I know they are different, as people use them when they turbo?

No, DKZ cams still have 0.445" lift on the inlet, same as D6C. The DFZ cam is 0.405". The 1.6L monopoint cam has approx. 0.380" lift.

No markings on it that we can see whatsoever. I'm going to take it out and put the Piper from my spare engine in instead, since it's more of a known quantity and a higher spec cam - was just trying to get away with the minimum required to get an engine in and running - lazy I know!

I'll measure the unknown one out on the bench before it goes into the spare engine.
