Removing Engine Vibrations - Mi16

Recommended Posts

eastlondonpug

Hello

I have been reading the forums and understand that some 205 mi16 suffer from engine vibrations between 1000-2000 rpm and vibrate the interior like mad. My car does this too. Does anyone know how to reduce this,or has anyone got any tips on replacing the mounts?

Thanks

What mounts do you have? solid items or stiffer rubber or standard? engine standard or 'cammed'? realistically how often are you in that very narrow and unusable powreband

All are standard mounts and standard rebuilt engine. Car is used daily in traffic so the stop/start in traffic is annoying. Any ideas?

On standard mounts it shouldn't really vibrate any more than an 8v.

Are you sure it's not vibrating because something is touching somewhere, like the master cylinder or exhaust, perhaps because the mounts are tired and allowing the engine to flap around like a fish out of water?

It's Group N mounts that are borderline intolerable on a road car at idle and low revs, particularly when new.

In all honesty do you pull away using less than 2k revs?

I have not had a decent running mi so can't really comment on them as standard form, but I am sure they're very smooth up to 3.5k iirc.

so as ant has said something doesnt sound right.

is the engine tilted or the exhaust angled to clear?

Anthony - I have checked everything, all clearances of the exhaust/MC with the body. Possible that the mounts are tired yes but are not apparently cracked or anything the last time I had seen them .

DCC- Engine is tilted 1 cm to clear a 4 branch manifold that would otherwise touch the under carriage of the car. Problem is we have a baby now and the vibration at idle is not really good for him.

Errr... yes. Frankly I'd feel a bit of a berk dialling in 4k+ revs and sidestepping the clutch in slow stop-start traffic :D

That doesn't sound like anything like enough on standard mounts given how much the engine will move under load - you'll probably only just about get away with that little clearance with Group N type mounts which do drastically reduce engine movement.

Anthony - thanks, the engine is tilted 1 cm and this has given almost a full 2 cms of clearance to the exhaust just to be clear.

Don't think I even give it 1200 pulling away, Dan is a hooligan though

I've got the same with my gti6 on bbm mounts get a horrilbe through the body vibration, I've checked for anything close or rubbing and there's nothing obvious. It's almost like a clutch judder.

It's only pulling away in first using minimal throttle I assumed it was down to the mounts. Is that a characteristic of bbm mounts?

Sorry for hijacking

Anything over standard mounts will simply produce a constant vibration and then noise at higher speed.

You get use to it.

Juddering suggests one or more of your mounts are knackered.

With standard engine mounts you can really feel the engine moving when changing gear etc.

It's a 205 at the end of the day, if you want a comfy car you need something else, which is why allot of us have them as 2nd car's

To be fair, after a Lexus even the smoothest 205 is going to feel like a washing machine full of bricks

That said, I've always found 205's to be pleasant enough places to be for the age/size when they're left comparatively unmolested, and vibration wise it's certainly no worse than my daily dagger-dagger powered dogbasket. The older I get the more I think that Peugeot got the balancing act between the various conflicting requirements spot on when they built the 205 and that many attempts to "improve" them really upset that when they're used as a daily road car.

The completely standard 205 I have at home is beyond smooth! it really is a dream and very very smooth idling. it is not a 1.9 mi16 with a badboy exhaust though.

p.s. 4k rpm launches are for winners.
