my 205s have been bought as normal everyday cars at normal everyday prices but now I might be buying a minter its a f plate 1.6 gti and its top money £4500ono had a quick look so far but going back next week for a better look.as its a standard car should it be 100% standard?

its got 1.9 wheels on.round side indicators and drivers seat bolster worn and its done 88000.looks a straight original car but its a lot of money so any hints tips are welcome.

For me at £4500 it would have to be absolutely 100%, no knocks dents scratches blemishes, no non standard bits, no work required, no corrosion anywhere, all the original papers books keys, evidence of recent overhaul of the dampers brakes rear beam etc.

I've got a set of very tidy '1.6' wheels if your interested.

you could always try and knock him down? Non original wheels, tell him its going to cost you £££ to get the seat repaired :)

I totally agree with Tom, top money and it should be perfect with much money spent. If you are paying that kind of money I beleive it should all be original. You don't want to go spending extra money on parts to make it so. I know most people go for 1900's but 1600s are really good and have a different character, they are slowly starting to be appreciated and starting to fetch better money. Good luck with your decision :)

Personally i would want it non standard/uprated.

I'd quite happy pay more for a mint refurb'd GTI6 like Dizzee's car.

A refurb'd standard 1.9 wouldn't be my first choice.

But i'm not after investment etc.

The price is in the bodywork and shell. If it is straight and original paint then other things can be swapped. The way the market is, £4,5k should buy you a beautiful 60k 1.6 with approx 5 owners, a full suite of paperwork and 100% original with evidence of a relatively recent cambelt and rear beam overhaul. For that money I would want the original Clarion head unit too as well as the original service books and Neiman keys.

Wheels devalue it. Side repeaters often had holes enlarged to fit them. Cloth seats are getting scarce now.

Sounds like £3000 if it is very tidy externally and rust free.
