Mot Fail...few Issues That I Need Help With

Recommended Posts

Just to add to this...the second MOT tester pointed out the rear NS bearing was shot. I knew it was on its way out but not as bad as it apparently is. Could this have caused the issues with the pads being thrown and the subsequent broken caliper? Assuming it could have put the wheel out of balance and given it a slight camber? Not sure why it happened after a week of being parked up though?

This is obviously costing a fair amount to put right (around £340 including a strip/clean/rebuild of the front brakes, the other MOT failures and the new MOT test) but it needs doing. More importantly, while Halfords were busy trying to find stupid things that shouldn't fail the car in order to fail it (new mechanic's words) they completely missed the wheel bearing.

Never get those chain rip off merchants to MOT a car, they always come up with loads of stuff so you will pay them to fix it.

Mine had the brake imbalance but my local specialist who MOT'd it just took the rear brakes apart, cleaned everything up and it was golden. Cost me £25 extra not worth the hassle of doing it myself.

Yea I realised. Been arguing with them. They want to reinspect the car to prove that they did stuff wrong and missed the wheel bearing (which was replaced yesterday). Surely the new valid MOT certificate and the fact that Halfords put the mileage down wrong is evidence enough?!

The work I had done did cost a fair amount, which stung quite a bit, but all brakes were stripped, cleaned and greased, pretty sure the fronts have been bled, the rear bearing was done and an MOT and a couple of other minor bits done.

Just need to get the handbrake to stop sticking all over again :(

Sadly I think the only way you would have got anywhere with them is to have ask for an mot appeal form but the fact it's been re motd and work has been done that's out the window plus you would have to send a cheque for a full mot price £54.85.

If ever in doubt get someone else to check it but don't have anything done to the car and then ask for an appeal form see what reaction you get from them then.

It's clear what has and hasn't been done to get it through the MOT though. If all else fails there's still my bank :)

Might be worth putting a complaint in writing to them try and get at least a refund for the mot but as you've had another mot and work done on the car you lose the leverage of getting vosa involved with an appeal. No garage want vosa involved even if they do everything by the book, anyone can miss something.

It seems like Halfords missed a fair bit while they were busy finding things that weren't wrong.
