Afm Work - Atp Or Bluestreak?

Recommended Posts

will1991

Hi,

I'm looking to get my AFM looked at before the engine goes back in the car as I know its been fiddled with in the past.

I rang both Bluestreak and ATP this morning to see what they had to say. ATP says they'll test and rebuild the AFM which will cost £150 +VAT (ouch) whereas Bluestreak told me they can only recalibrate it, they used to do full refurbs but I was told the parts to do so are now unavailable, this costs £50.

I've read good things about ATP but Bluestreak was a new name to me - has anybody used them for AFM work before?

What would they actaully replace other than the tracks, if anything? My unit has done 56k if that makes any difference and it looks like one end of 'W spring' has snapped off (but I'm not sure that makes any functional difference), I attach a picture of the gubbins...

Any views and/or experiences re. the above would be great.

Cheers,

Will

never heard of bluestreak, tbh with the age if these units its well worth a rebuild, the price was £150 9 years ago !!!

It's a lot of money at £380 but thanks for the offer. Looks like it's going to ATP.

I spoke to ATP a little while back and was still £150 fixed price. For this they will rebuild and even if they find loads wrong it would still be that price. Feedback I've heard has always been very good.

I spoke with ATP about 8 or 9 weeks ago enquiring about a fully refurbished unit (Bosch part number 0 280 202 109, ATP part number XMB2109) , their response was that they did not refurbish them now but if it had a known fault they may be able to fix it.

Would be nice to get an update on this.

I'd read something you posted about this before I rang them. I just told them it had no known faults and I wanted it refurbished as I was rebuilding the car and wanted to ensure it was tip-top... They certainly didn't say they couldn't refurbish it.

I'll probably send mine off and get it back next week so we'll see what happens.

I got mine back today. Don't really have much to report but I can confirm they'll refurb your AFM...although the price is fairly wince-worthy.

They rang me up once they'd had a look over it to let me know that it was 'faulty' and 'running rich', and did I want to proceed with getting the work done.

It certainly looks like new externally, I guess it looks pretty clean in the box too but I'm not about to pop the top off as it voids the warranty!

I won't be able to comment until everything's back in the car, but even then I've replaced and refurbished so many bits I'm not sure I'd be able to narrow any changes down to this. We'll see...

They received my unit on the Wednesday, called me about it on the Thursday, did the work on the Monday and I had it back on the Tuesday - so you could probably have one back within the week.

Messing with the tension on the AFM spring without marking it first is daft. For some reason garages seem to think its fine to change this spring setting without marking the original position to get the emissions down enough for its MOT. I've even heard stupid comments in my early days of crusing that "Tightening the AFM spring makes it go faster!" so finding an unmolested AFM has been proven difficult.

I started to refurb an AFM myself as it's only a matter of stripping it down, sending the casing for vapour blasting, replacing the 2 flap bearings (which were knackard) and re-tracking the creamic plate.

Calibrating an unmarked spring flap without specialised equipment could be achived by using a gastester with the AFM adjustment screw 2.5 turns out. and adjusting the spring tension untill you get a reading around 2.5%.

Not as good as claibrated AFM, but this is the budget DIY option here and propably what most 205 are running like now anyway as I've never seen a 205 that the AFM cover hasn't been off and runs like the day it came of the production line.

The AFM body is a sealed unit and to split the base plate from the top half you will have to drill out the rivets on the underside, theres about 14 in total under a strip of clear silicone. I started to drill and tap out the rivets using an M3 tap and planned on fixing it all back together using M3 Cap head screws (or button if you can find them) then I was going to replace the bearings and have the casing Vapour blasted. But I found a new one going cheap on ebay, so bought that instead.

MY AFM refurb project has been shelved, but If anyone wants the parts, they are wlecome to them, if they are willing to collect. - its a 1.6 AFM BTW
