Machining Rusty Brake Discs

Recommended Posts

Gavin Waddell

As per the title, i have a set of 307 brake discs on my 205 and its been sat for about a year now, it was under a cover, but the brake discs on the front are bit rusty and i was wondering if a could skim a couple 00s off the face to get rid of the rust ive got a lathe a work that i can use, but really dont know if it is something that is commonly done. i lgoogled it and people talk about special machines ,and doing it on a lathe could turn the brake disc into a file.

Has any one done this before, as i woud rather not want to buy a new set of discs theyve done 2000miles max

Thanks Gavin

psI found a company who can do it but they charge more than a new set costs ?

Hahahahaha the Redneck way

Just been to look at them and i think a good going over with a wire wheel should do the trick, or one of those rust removal disks for pain work should do it.

We often do this to re-face rotors which are obviously very expensive to replace in some instances!

We friction drive them off a very flat spigoted back plate in the chuck and obviously a fair bit of pressure with the tail stock and a suitable centre.

Nice and steady with your speeds and feeds, 100 revs or less normally. Turn both faces in one setting to avoid the faces being machined out of parallel.

Here's me getting every last bit out of one of my AP rotors! :P

As dan says I'd just wire brush them and drive round steady, failing that replace them unless they're something fancy!

As above, unless they are badly grooved or pitted then you can put them in the lathe and just use some emery cloth to clean the rust off them. But driving along the pads will perform the same task so it comes down to whether or not you can be arsed to take them off the car or not!

Cool guys thanks, they are off the car so simples, just another though could I sand blast them also.

that could pit the surface of the disc I would suspect.

Yeah thought of that afterwards, just going I give them them a good sanding with some 320 grit paper, they are not actually that bad.
