Restored Miami Blue 205 1.6 Gti (Whats It Worth)

Hi all, not sure if this is in the rite section (sorry if it isn't).

 

Im looking to sell my peugeot 205 1.6 gti in miami blue on a 1991, phase 2. Its had a full restoration about 5-6 years ago and everything and i mean everything is Brand new, mainly genuine peugeot aswell.

 

This was a restoration for the car to be used not to be trailered to shows as a concourse show winning car so although very very clean its in my opinion NOT concourse.

 

The 1.6 gti engine has been fully rebuilt as has the gearbox. The rear axel has had a fully rebuild inc tubes using genuine peugeot parts not just a cheap bearing kit.

 

Front valance,rear valance,front bumper,rear bumper, arch kit, red arch/door trim, bumper fitting kits, arch fitting kits, headlights, indicators, rear lights, badges etc etc are all brand new genuine peugeot (pics dont show with new red strips as they wasn't fitted then)

 

Every nut and bolt was replaced using genuine peugeot parts.

 

Its got bilstein B4 suspension front and rear, goodridge braided hoses front and rear, powerflex exhaust rubbers.

 

All fuel lines, clips, master cylinder, calipers, drums,shoes etc are all brand new genuine peugeot

 

I have a folder with all the work its had done and all the new parts with many diagrams, information etc etc adding upto £1000`s & £1000`s the paint job alone was £2500.

 

Its had a full bare shell respray, all underneath has been fully sealed using high quality products not your cheap stuff you can get at motor factors.

 

I welcome any comments about the car in general but im really after a price gauge of what people think its worth as im going to be putting it up for sale very soon (when its completely finished)

EBay, piston heads and classic car sales sites are your best bets. You'll be looking at 3.5-5k by the sounds of it. Finding somebody to pay that will be the hard bit.

This kind of thread usually degenerates into a pro and con discussions. Times and opinions are changing. That level of effort deserves and would likely attract more than £3k-£5k I think, but only the market will tell. Put a standard wing (and pepperpots) back on and start at £9k, Why not?

Thanks for comments both, when you say standard wing do you mean spoiler? Ifso that is 100% going back standard (spoiler forsale if anyone wants it) its a very rare guttmann. I have toyed with the idea of putting the original 1.6 wheels back on it.

 

Also going to put a standard airbox on as this filter is rubbish and looks rubbish and i have to move the horn to the correct place so i can put the jack back where it should be.

P.s i think 9k would be abit ambitious lol

Yes I meant spoiler. When going for a higher price, originality and OEM is usually going to win out. Anything else looks tricked up or messed about with starts to put doubt in the mind. It is more likely to attract a top price if it is as pure and 'original' as possible. Even though the 'originality' is from new OEM replacements.

Yep, standard spoiler, air filter box and 1.6 wheels would definitely bump up the appeal. It looks great and 5k+ would probably be achievable imo.

 

Those Guttmann spoilers are like hens teeth so you could be on to a winner on ebay with that too...

Yes exactly, i totally agree and that was my point. If this was a super low mileage, sub 30,000 mile absolutely mint 205 gti with 1 owner all service history, original keys,number plates,window dealer stickers, original bill of sale from new which are all matching etc etc then i would say yes to the rite person then you could probably get 9k+ for it.

 

Mine isnt that type of car though

Like mentioned I would have the pepperpots on and also paint the slam panel to the right colour, and the chasis number area. Thats just my opinion. I think its a very smart 205! - Wish mine was as nice.

No it may not be "that type of car" but it is the next best (better?) thing. It will appeal to someone who wants that but cannot get it. I think your honesty and humilty in that respect will help too. Don't sell your effort too short to start with.

Weser, thanks for the comments but i cant take credit for this. This is how i bought it. to be honest If i would of done it i would of done things slightly different (Totally original) no polished parts, no red block etc etc.

 

I agree with the slam panel and ive already got one being painted in the original cream colour. Never even thought of the chassis number area to be honest but glad you said that as i like that idea (y)

Change the spoiler, filter, slam panel and wheels as mentioned and advertise it for 6k and see what happens.

 

It looks lovely but as you know yourself it isn't gonna be worth top money like an original.

At the end of the day its only worth what someone is willing to pay isnt it? If someone wants to give me 9k i would quite happily accept lol. but i wouldnt be asking that much, I just wanted to get people`s thoughts on what they thought about the car and general value and it seems i was rite in thinking what i did.

allanallen: i couldn't agree more with what everyone is saying and i will definatley be changing what has been previously mentioned as i also think it would make it better and appeal to the type of person i want to sell it to.

 

Again totally agree, original, low mile mint examples on the hole will always be worth more than restored examples. (the original car would have to be A1/show room condition though)

Well if it helps I have a near original 1.6 gti, will be replacing the 1.9 wheels with 1.6 items, new cambelt kit and a rebuilt rear beam. when it's ready I will be advertising it for 4k. 120k on the clock, full (extensive) service history, but I have not invested in it quite the same as you have.

 

now that I have seen your photos, these are just things I would pick up on if I were to buy it, not saying that they are bad, infact I am very envious of your car, its bloody beautiful, but if you want top dollar these are the things I would notice -

 

the things on top of the struts for the brace, the wrong colour expansion bottle, airbox, spoiler, the cable stop for the bonnet cable seems to be in the wrong place (comparing to my phase 1.5, not sure if phase 2 was different), washer jet pipe coming the wrong side?, the flywheel cover painted silver instead of black, the horns/jack, the calipers painted red, the red arb, slam panel wrong colour, bonnet catch looks slightly mis aligned and the accelerator cable.

 

These are mostly all things which with £50-100 you can quite easily get all sorted. You'll easily be looking at 6k heading towards 7k. Might be worth speaking to a company called KGF who specialise in selling mint/immaculate examples of cars.

 

Lovely looking motor and when you do come to sell it I will happily point anybody I know looking for 1 in your direction.

That's the spirit Dan! If everything is correct it will be (is) a cracker. I think we as a community need to recognise and promote the value of the 205....

I agree with what Dan says, for top dollar it needs to be as original as can be. One I've spotted as a geek is the exhaust tail is the wrong type for the age of the car.

However sadly i only think AT THE MOMENT that they need to be 1.9 cars to make the big money, and that's coming from the owner of a 64k 1.6 that's had similar treatment underneath.

...and look it's "official" 23rd Best Drivers Car of all time - even their stock photo is a 1.6. There's a lot of expensive exotics behind the 205...

...and for the record when I say "recognise and promote the value" I mean that with proportionate and appropriate common sense and the best of humour. If we as owners don't inherently value something then nobody else will. The stock of good cars left is diminishing. OEM parts are running out and there are a lot of 20 somethings coming through who used own one....

Dan, thanks for comments and i totally agree with you and ive already noticed pretty much everything of what you mentioned, expansion bottle is brand new genuine peugeot, I know you can get black ones aswell but i prefer this colour (looks cleaner).

 

The slam pannel is getting changed for the correct colour, standard spoiler going back on, standard airbox (after being refurbed) is going back on, cam cover is actually polished (i dont like it) some of them are silver though. Horns will be located down on the n/s front light panel/bumper bracket so i can put jack back in engine bay. red calipers and arb i would prefer black and silver so i may put that back to how it should be.

 

The strut brace mounts will be coming off and the cable will be re aligned to outside of inlet.

 

I would also like to pull engine out change that to the silver it should be, change sump and paint black, change inlet for standard not polished, change fuel reg and rail for standard unpolished and get a new top cambelt cover from peugeot as i dont like it how it is. Also need the asbestos sticker for the slam panel but i very much doubt ill be doing this as im only selling. if i was keeping it, it would of already been changed to how i like it.

Hi Tom, thanks for comment. To be honest im not looking for stupid money, just what its worth.

 

This is not a show winning concourse example (would be if i built it) lol its just a nicely restored 205 gti that gets used and this will reflect that in the price.

 

I know its not 100% perfect and some things to be 100% anal about it being original would need changing (which is what im like) but im not looking to do that with this car as im selling it.

Ashley, thats because the 205 gti is a bloody legend of a car and i think ive had over 70 of them already lol and will still have one at the back of my garage the day i die (y)

Thats a great example and I would hope that £7K+ is a realistic figure.

 

I'm only 17 months into my "best of my ability" restoration and even over this short time, I believe I have witnessed the last of many critical items, particularly the rubber sealing products, red stips, trims, bumpers....the list goes on and now even getting decent 2nd hand trims is becoming difficult...bit long winded I know, but my point is that a full restoration with OE parts will very soon be a thing of the past.

 

To do a restoration such as that today (using as many OE parts as can be sourced) would be a massive expense, that I would estimate to well over £10K possibly upto £14-£15K.

 

So I believe £7k should be an achievable figure given the above.

7K doesn't seem too unreasonable as a starting point. I'd leave the spoiler on though it was a period option from a reputable company. Not as if its a cherry bomb exhaust!

Legend indeed. Amen. I have a problem; I bought mine as a future investment because I love them. Trouble is I don't know if I could ever bring myself to sell it. 70!!! This is only my third.

 

What Paul said. Unless a secret stash of parts turn up something like the storage facility at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark, then we are seeing the last of oem restorations.
