Won't Run With Afm Plugged In.

Treated my self to a fairly standard 1.6 GTI in need of a little tlc last week. Tidied a few jobs today including a duff tach relay, discs and pads and a few interior jobs, coin tray, parcel shelf ect.

I was told the car previously had been fitted with some form of bike carbs. It's now back to standard injection but something is still a miss.

Won't start unless the throttle is to the floor, once it starts it will Idie for around 20 sec, during this time ant throttle and it will choke and die.

With the AFM unplugged it will not idle but will Rev. I swapped it with a working replacment AFM but made no diffrence at all.

Being honest it's been over 10 years since I worked on one if these 8v engines.

Disconnect the blue coolant temp sensor and the car starts and revs as it should.

What's at fault with these, is it a sensor fault or wiring issue?

could be either but without actually pulling a finger and checking we're just guessing, grab a haynes manual and a multimeter and get crackling :)

As you've probably guessed by most of my other posts, I'm as thick as mince when it comes to wiring and testing things with a multi meter .

I'm only on here to ask questions once I'm home and away from the car.

I have a newer 8v engine at the unit and was going to rob the sensor but its not in the same location.

If it's shorted out,(ie. resistance is the same as if you touch both ends of the multimeter together),then it will cause the engine not to run.

Thanks Alex

That now makes sense, I'll check it out at the weekend and let you know how I get on as I noticed the last thread you replied to reguarding this fault was not updated.
