Mi16 Rebuild

Recommended Posts

arwel

My engine is in need of a rebuild. On stripping today it shows the main crank just needs new shells but the con rod shells are toast. Crank will go to be re ground in the hope it can be salvaged so will I guess I'll need oversized shells to compensate this then.

Where is the best place to get the original softer type of shells from? And con rods for that matter as they look a little worse for wear.

Cheers

Arwel

ACL bearings are what you need, You'll only find old stock now as ACL went into receivership unless someone has bought them now, Rods stick a wanted add up but get the engineers to check them, Only normally need replacement if they have got hot

I was fortunate to get a few sets from ACL just before the end last July. They did tell me however, that a UK engine reconditioner bought the remaining 60+ sets. The same bearing is used in the diesel. So ring around!

Definitely close & hone the conrods.

They aren't soft by the way. The Mi16 rod bearings were copper/lead or the "Duraglide" in ACL speak.

Interestingly, the ACL website has changed and they are just listing Race Series bearings, part number 4B7700H for XU9/XU10.

try south wales pistons, they have stock of some stuff and ferraris can drop stuff off to them quite quickly if they haven't.

Cheers Welshpug.

One more question. Are the 1.9 8v crank and con rods the same as the 1.9 16v?

The 8v crank will fit and is lighter but it does not have the counterweights of the 16v one.

The conrods are not interchangeable since the way they attach to the pistons differs - some machining would be required.

Cheers Sam. One last one. Can the head from a 1.9 16v be used on a 2.0 16v? I'm sure I read that it can but can't find the thread again. Is there any advantages power/torque wise to this or would it be the same as a complete 1.9 mi16?

Yes, you can use a 1.9L 16V head on a 2L block. You just need to use a diesel head bolt over the water pump. In terms of performance, there is absolutely zero difference as the heads are identical in terms of chamber, valves, ports etc. I did a summary here:
