if its the same as a standard xu starter then a 306 diesel one fits and is lighter/newer design

Just use a late slimline type Valeo starter as found on various late 90's 1.8/2.0 16v 306/406 etc models.

You'll need to swap the solenoid wire terminal to a ring type connector, but otherwise it's a straight swap and they're far better than the original fat bodied 80's and early 90's 205/405 starter motors.

For what it is worth for anybody in the future, I have a high compression 8v engine, so far I have killed 2 slimline valeo starters in 6 months, have fitted the only remaining spare starter I have, a normal fat 205 starter.

A few months ago we robbed a box from a van in a scrapyard and took the starter too. That starter was geared, and I can only assume the reason being the much higher compression on the diseasle. Not sure how the starter has lasted (since fitted to a standard fettle xu9 iirc), but depending on how this current starter lasts I'll be going for one of those next time.

Interestingly on a side note I seem to recall it being a mitsubishi manufactured part, I am sure mei will confirm.

The slimline starters are fitted to 306/406 diesels, and seem to cope with 20:1 compression fine. Although they do come in three or four power ratings with the diesels having the 1.1/1.4kW motor, and the petrol engines having the lower powered ones.

I have fitted a valeo 406 2.1td starter on my mi16 and it spins the engine fast enough to make you worry that you've lost all compression - very effective though. I believe there are varying versions; 1.1, 1.4 and 1.7Kw iirc. Mine is the latter.

The Mitsubishi ones are often regarded as the best, so much so that the Citroen service bulletins for the BX 16v state that you must only use them when the original fails.
