1.4 Tu Engine Swap

Recommended Posts

MKrisz92

Hey there :)

I've just got a Roland Garros Cabriolet, which is nice, but I'd like a bit more power. Which conversion should I go for, which involves the least modification? I'd like to keep it standard. Can I put a 1.6 16v engine into it without changing anything else? So basically I'm looking for a swap, where the only thing I change is the engine (and wiring of course).

My engine is a '94 injection.

The 1.6 16v (106gti/saxo vts) is a nice conversion. You will need to grind a little bit of metal off the drivers side engine mount arm, just underneath where the inlet manifold is, as the 16v one will hit it. You will also need to cut the end off the 16v exhaust downpipe and weld on the original bend that goes over the subframe from your current engine. You *may* need to use a 205gti fuel tank and pump, as I'm not sure if yours with single point injection will be the correct pressure.

I'd like to see some photos of the car, I've got two Rolands myself :)

One thing to note, if you do go down the 16v route, is that the engine is pretty heavy, and the base model front suspension setup can struggle under the weight a bit, so I would advise fitting gti subframe/wishbones/droplinks to help the handling.

Oh I see. This is the struggle I wanted to avoid, but it seems I can't avoid changing the subframe, wishbones, rear beam etc. Time will tell, first of all I want to restore it to a nice condition :)

Edit: Another question: in terms of mpg/fuel consumption, is there a big difference between the 1,6 16v (tu5) or a 1.9gti? The gti engine is much more common here and easier to get hold of. I'd like a nice, reliable and lively engine, which won't eat up all the petrol :D

You can still get away with using the standard setup, I did for about a year, but it felt much nicer when I changed to gti subframe.

Looks good :)

I used to get about 38mpg out of my tu5, which i thought was pretty good. Im not sure what the average 1.9 can do mileage wise.

They certainly are a lot of fun in a 205

a well setup 1.9 will do about the same or more without any weight penalty at all and a straight fit stronger box and shafts.

if its a 1.4 tu I think the easy option would be to fit a 1.6 tu out of a 306.

I made this swap engine here in Brazil, homemade totally, basically TU5JP4 stock, ECU Bosch ME7.44 gasoline only, of before 2003 and I adapted for the original wiring of 205.

You can follow of Jonnhy says about mount arm engine, I gave up because I felt very insecure in cut the arm, then I made a custom support to keep the engine in the most upright position possible, three pics about this:

Fuel bomb I use one compatible with 3.5 bar of pression. How the fuel line of cars that use TU5 have the pressure in back, so the flute in the inlet manifold don't have anything, you'll need of one pressure regulator, Fiat have some(in, out pressurized, and return).

With the posicion of engine I can use/adapt power steering too. Suspension I use set of 206 1.6.

The only thing that I didn't run yet is the RPM signal in the dashboard, the rest is OK.

Hope this helps a little more, and sorry my english hahaha
