205 Won't Start

Recommended Posts

need some advice on what to try next. il start with the car it a 205 gti with gti6 engine fitted, the car has been running perfect for over a year now until i went to start it this morning and wont start.

first thing i noticed was the fuel pump didn't prime so checked the fuses all are good, so then manually powered the pump and it works but the car still didn't start so then checked for spark and no spark.

iv now had the whole dash out checking for broken wires or anything that looks out of place but cant find anything, so what should i look into next?

Are you sure it's not just the battery given up?

I'm sure someone else had the same thing a couple of weeks ago. Try looking back through recents topics of a similar name.

check for live at the double relay, also check you get switched live and the injectors and coil power up, if all good change the crank sensor as mentioned.

im unfamiliar with the double relay where is it located?

ok a quick ebay search and found what it was

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peugeot-306-GTI6-FUEL-PUMP-INJECTOR-DOUBLE-RELAY-GTI-6-XSI-INJECTION-2-0-16V-/141391638475?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item20eb992fcb

how do i go about checking for live and switched live

Should be next to the ECU somewhere - usually brown or black in colour, about the size of a large matchbox.

If the fuel pump isn't priming and you've no spark I'd be checking for the required voltages at the various pins (do a search) and replacing the relay if they're OK.

Howdy Matt, if your sure the loom joints are good, is the inertia switch shorting good?

IIRC on the plug for the double relay you should get 12v at pins 11, 2, 8 and 15

And an ignition live at 14

The pin numbers are on the face of the loom plug but you need good eyes and light to see them.

And take it from there.

so following this i have nothing at pins 11,2,8 and 15 but i do have a switched live on 14

what could be causing this

Missing constant 12v feed.

On a 306 sourced loom this comes from the alternator, on a Ph1 Xsara sourced loom it's typically to the shunt box.

ok small update the wire that goes from the alternator to starter is broken at the starter end

i have reconnected it and the fuel pump now primes but still dose not start. i have tried two different double relays, where should i go from here?

Do you now have spark?

What else have you touched or played around with in the meantime trying to get it to work?

It's after all unlikely (but not impossible) that you had two separate faults occur at the same time to stop the car running, so more likely you've disturbed or disconnected something whilst trying to solve the original alternator wiring issue.

update i have it running turned out to be the ecu luckily i had a spare but now i have a miss fire on cylinder no1, i have swapped the coil packs over and swapped the spark plugs but still no change so all that is left is the signal to the coil or the injector, i need to know how to check the working i have a multi meter but not sure how to use it to check the coil feed and injector

also cylinder no3 is not firing as if i pull either the coil plug or the injector plug off no2 or no4 it starts to miss then goes back when reconnected but no1 and no3 makes no difference when i pull the plugs

update have pulled the injector rail and injectors out and cranked over only 2 and 4 are working but when i swap the plugs round the no4 stops working and no3 works so i have another electrical issue, would the be any reason why only two of he injectors and getting signal?

I think, pin 2 and Pin 1 on the ECU plug, and iirc when you look at the facia of the ecu plug, with biggest row of pins to the top, 1 is the very RHS, with 2 next to it.

The other wires at all injectors should go to Pin 4 of double relay.

I'm almost certain the above is correct, but check yourself before doing anything drastic

ok so after checking all the connections and still not having any luck i was almost about to through in the towel when i had one more option and tired another ecu and what do you know it runs, cant believe how much agro its caused from 1 broken wire, i can only amuse that the broken wire had touched the block and caused a short and blown the ecu but at least its fixed now (just have to spend a day putting it all back together)

thanks for all the advice it helped

You may well be right but it should be tolerant of shorts really, for example the Mi16 ECU shuts down entirely to protect itself when the injector wire is grounded and wont run again until the power to it is turned off and on again.
