Suplex Springs...

Recommended Posts

driversdomainuk

Hi

I have fitted new standard dampers all round on my 1.9 (Bilstein) and suplux springs - only cost £22 on eBay (there is probably a reason for that!!!)

Anyway the car sits far far too high, and has remained like this for 2 weeks now, and having driven 20 miles...

Anyone used Suplex springs? Weird thing is, we measured the spring and damper assembly when it was all together before it was fitted and it was exactly the same length as the original one - great we though. However, now they are on it looks awful...

Any ideas? I can only imagine the LB spring rate is wrong?

Tempted to get some Eibach lowering springs...

Rob

didn't check - but they all fitted in fine. Strange thing - the original 25 yr old springs made the car sit a little higher than what I would consider to be standard - but no idea how this could be!

205 GTi's do sit a little higher than you'd expect them to as standard, but there's been a few people recently who have had problems with aftermarket springs supposedly for GTi models sitting far, far too high.

Thanks Anthony - why do you think this is? Poor measurement of the spring weight? Where can I buy originals (if you can!)

Do you have a picture of how high your car is sitting to see whether it's even an issue?

This is my old standard height 1.9 GTi to give you an idea of how they should look:

The standard 1.9 GTi springs (two yellow stripe) are no longer available from Peugeot unfortunately, unless there's a set gathering dust on a dealers shelf somewhere that Farmer could help track down. There are (or were last time I looked) other springs listed for 205 injection models, but I've no idea what models/specs they're for.

If you're not worried about them being new, I'm sure someone will have a set of used GTi springs if you put a post in the wanted section.

No I don't - although it is a lot higher than that - can make a fist and it easily fits in under arch..!

The diameter of the spring is needed really, and coil number.

I fitted 13.1mm springs with 5.5 coils (iirc) - they are listed as a 40 or 50mm lowering spring for a 106 - brought the height of mine to exactly where I wanted it. It's about an inch between arch and tyre (195 50 15)

fist in the arch sounds spot on for a standard car.

35mm dan, not 50!

As above, several recent threads on this. I fitted some AMK and KYB springs sourced from local motor factors. Both were the same no. of coils and wire dia. as the springs I removed and made the car sit what I thought was high at the front. I don't know for sure though what the springs were that I removed, which were totally rusted up.

At the time my rear beam was lowered by an unknown amount. After having it rebuilt by SSP/Mountjoy to standard ride height, the car now sits level with slightly more arch/tyre gap at the front than the rear (as it should be).

It still looks a little higher than Anthony's pic above, but drives very well so I'm living with it. I suspect so many cars have been lowered that the standard ride height is unfamiliar to most and looks high.

The 309 GTI I recently bought had a pair of Supplex front springs ( black powder coat ) fitted by the guy who did a lot of work on it about 9 months ago . He rebuilt it to standard spec including ride height so he sourced the new springs from Germany iirc . It did look too high at first but it probably is the same as the original height before the springs had a chance to settle a bit .Either way it was too high for me and I fitted a pair of used Apex yellow springs which lowered it exactly 30mm and it looks just right now .There was a small sticker on the springs but no number .
