rallyeash 155 Posted December 23, 2014 Hehe probably the last time stu posts on this thread! Picked up another bush the same this morning as will use the same one for both engine and gearbox.
stu8v 68 1 Cars Posted December 23, 2014 Crack on, 1/4 plate or bigger will suffice. ;-) May weigh you down somewhat!
rallyeash 155 Posted December 23, 2014 I had those brackets spare, pre drilled and cut in that shape so were used Shouldn't think with 225hp and 800kg I'll be too worried about an extra kilo
allanallen 528 2 Cars Posted December 23, 2014 Stu, seriously? I'm all for constructive criticism but the piss taking comments with little explanation is a bit unnecessary don't you think? Ash isn't a welder/fabricator/car builder and he's having a go at doing an unconventional conversion, yes 1/4" plate is ott but it's to hand and bloody strong, nowt wrong with being 'belt and braces' about stuff like engine mounts, especially when weight isn't an issue. rallyeash 155 Posted December 23, 2014 Maybe it's just jealously! Either way I'm not really bothered. Correct I'm not a fabricator, I have a good idea on things and love self teaching. The end result won't be as clean as if I took it to a specialist place for a conversation but for me there's more satisfaction in doing it myself and learning. I'll make mistakes along the way as we all do. It'll work perfectly fine, reliable and most of all safe by the time I'm finished. If it's not a work of art like for example Davenports 106 XSI (the rattle box) I'm really not fussed.
blandy 29 Posted December 23, 2014 Nothing more satisfying than building it yourself
rallyeash 155 Posted December 29, 2014 So I've been playing with the gearbox mount and head scratching on what to do, the bush above wasn't really strong enough and sagged which I wasn't keen on. So I decided to make something similar to the pug setup Two studs stick up here, the rear one is a lower and the original mount is a step down design. Couple of spacers I had bring it back up level. I cut out a section of steel drilled holes to mount, drilled through the centre and added the original peugeot gearbox stud. I welded it on the underside, few tacs around the top and painted it I then made a mount for the peugeot gearbox mount, I'm using a standard pug one but if it's not soft it's then dead easy to swap to a bm item
allye 530 3 Cars Posted December 29, 2014 Simple, and effective!
rallyeash 155 Posted December 29, 2014 Before stu comments it'll get tidied up, rounded off and all that when the engine comes back out. Hehe
allanallen 528 2 Cars Posted December 29, 2014 Are you gonna brace the mount on the body up a bit ash? My only concern would be that bit bending.
rallyeash 155 Posted December 29, 2014 Yup going to add side supports. But it's easier to do once the engines back out.
madspikes 41 1 Cars Posted December 29, 2014 Nice -It's frustrating when you go down a path to solve a problem such this, and spend hours working on it. Then after a think decide that all the previous work was bollards, and a far simpler solution was staring you in the face all the time. Clive
rallyeash 155 Posted December 29, 2014 It really is! But it's just part of carrying out a non documented conversion. Once I finished the gearbox mount I was thinking I bet it would now bolt straight into the original pug gearbox mount/battery tray. Which would of also meant I could keep the battery under the bonnet! Ah well. Live and learn. It'll be better in the boot anyhow.
Tom Fenton 1,542 Posted December 29, 2014 Could you not use the other tapped hole that is near the rear one on the gearbox? Make up a bar spacer that picks up the rear one you have used and also the other tapped hole, then incorporate that into the plate you have made? Also seems a shame you couldn't have made a chassis bracket that used the original captive nuts, just to allow you to unbolt and remove which could make things easier in the event of needing to do say a clutch change with the engine in the car. All constructive criticism by the way, keep at it.
Dj_mini 7 Posted December 29, 2014 Love the idea of this conversion ever since I had a go in Sandy's 309 with the h22. Keep the progress up ash some times trial and error is the best way to get something that works well in the end!
rallyeash 155 Posted December 29, 2014 I did look using all three and originally the plate did this, however it was very tight against the chassis and with a 6mm plate I figured it'll be perfectly strong enough on the 2 so chopped the plate down. I will be drilling through and bolting short M8 bolts through the plate to hold the gearbox mount as original. Again a job once the engines out. Probably tomorrow actually. No worries, constructive is good, helps improve.
rallyeash 155 Posted December 29, 2014 Dan, cheers, btw I found those arches a couple of days ago! Typical! Had fallen down the back of some racking.
rallyeash 155 Posted December 29, 2014 Tom, possibly could of made a removable mount, the 205 one is welded in and it's still easy to remove the box dropping it out through the nearside arch so shouldn't be to much of a bother.
rallyeash 155 Posted December 31, 2014 So got the engine mounts finished off and some good progress 309 GTI arms and Gaz coilovers handed down from the 205 Which come with eccentric top mounts Back on 4 wheels (borrowed from the 205 while it's apart) Engine back in permanently sump clearance is fine Subtle - ish

madspikes 41 1 Cars Posted December 31, 2014 What about shafts?
rallyeash 155 Posted December 31, 2014 They will be 309 outers and Honda inners. Most likely a glorified cut and shut but it's not something I'll entertain. When purchasing the engine I got civic shafts so I'll take 309 shafts and civic shafts to a company that can balance them. Possibly Colin Satchell or Watson rally.
