Replacing Ignition Barrel

Recommended Posts

MaxGTX

Replacing my ignition barrel today hopefully. The old one collapsed and the key got stuck in and wouldn't turn.

Anyone done this before? Any hints?

I've been told the bolts cannot be reused when putting the new barrel in, I'll need to get hold of some of those.

To remove the barrel you need to turn the key to a particular position (I forget which one) which allows you to press a securing pin in otherwise it will be stuck in the column. As your key is stuck you might not be able to do that. I've drilled one out before but it is very hard metal and takes a long time.

There is only one small bolt holding the barrel in and there is no need to replace it.

The securing pins are fairly soft so you can squash them out of the way using a hammer and punch. I've had to do it a few times over the years.

Having trouble getting the new one on, it just won't line up.

The little black bit behind that connects the wires to the barrel has just broken.
