Popping Out Of Third Gear

Recommended Posts

MaxGTX

My GTX keeps popping out of gear. Usually third, but can happen in other gears too. This occurs when going over a bump, or going round a corner, or just lifting off. Accelerating in third is fine. Damo on here knows the car, and seems to think it's linkages. Which, http://peugeot-tuning-parts.co.uk/205-/-309-gti-be3-uprated-steel-gear-linkage-kit.html problem solved, right?

I've taken it to a local garage and they don't think it's linkages, so a replacement box might be on the christmas wishlist.. Any thoughts?

Worn engine mounts?

A possibility, what would the other (if any) symptoms be?

The most noticeable thing would be the engine movement when coming on and off throttle. Drive along and have a listen/feel out for it

Alright Kane, thanks for that.

I'll listen out for that. I really hope it is linkages haha.

Good point on the engine mounts, I had something similar following hard acceleration after the gti6 engine was in and it was the gearbox mount.

Engine flapped around like a fish on the rolling road!! Changed the gearbox mount and all fixed.

Not too much of an issue changing the mounts to be honest, plus you have the benefit of getting brand new oem quality ones from bakerbm. Oh and looks like there is just a set popped up on the for sale section..

Can't act on it now, the ignition is in pieces at the moment :P

Thanks for the help. :)

Sounds more like a box issue I'm afraid, being a MA it could be a few different things,

The linkages if worn normally pop off and that's it, the link is only for GTi models and it shows what they know as early and CAT model GTi's use different ones + for some threaded bar and heat shrink it's allot of ££

AFAIK I am the only one that supplies the MA linkages as the longest rod has a bend in it, BUT some models used a Rubber clip on type on the Quadrant which means you need to change this for the early type.

Engine Mounts again, I'd go OE as the top 2 do little if uprated as the engine just hangs off them, the lower one you can either use a hard rubber one like Vibra Tec or BBM but again on a std Road car a OE Pug one rotated 90 degrees works a treat with no vibration into the cabin

A replacement box is hit and miss due to the amount of different types and as above the MA box's are very well known for problems

Thanks very much for the reply.

Might just bite the bullet and get another box. Where would you recommend getting one from? Is it worth getting a direct replacement or something else? I've heard 106 boxes fit, is this true, and is there any gain from that?

Thanks.

106 and Saxo box's fit but you need to make sure it's a Alloy block engine as the bell housings are different on the Iron block ones, Getting a direct replacement one for a 205 I would think is somewhat difficult to say the least.

The box's are also found in Rovers and the new Mini's but are only usefull for the internals

Right, sounds like a 106/Saxo box is the one to go for. I'm going to rule out engine mounts first. :)
