Viewing A Dimma

Recommended Posts

Peetypug

Morning guys and girls.

Long time since I've posted on here.

I'm looking at buying a dimma, I'm told the one im interested in is an original one, but it has not tags.

What do I need to look for to prove its a real one, any tell tales?

Is there any way of checking from the number plate?

Cheers

So I'll know it's an original if it needs welding?

So most 205s are dimmas then? :P

Ffs have a really good look round it, if you're serious pull the rear 1/4 interior trim off and check for rot.. Because it will be

If its a copy it may have less rot as the kit may not have been on that long

As far as knowing if its original . I was informed that in the UK there was no lists taken against registrations but Dimma in Belgium can varify if its a dimma original

All though some say that don't mean it is ha ha

Also a lot depends on your skills and what do you want a project from the ground up or one on the road ?

I've been after one for a while. A none runner has turned up, as with most of the none mint ones, it's not got the lights or wheels.

I'm guessing if it's got metal wings then its a good indication of a genuine one

What about running gear, wide track or spacers?

I take it you don't know nothing about a dimma then ( not trying to sound like an arse or being cocky )

They are fibreglass kits on 205's

The wheels give it the depth to fill the arches (not the running gear)

Lights are standard 205 ones unless you use a twin headlight conversion

If its a solid shell then its worth getting cos now they are getting rare and very rare in the dimma world

front end useally rot and esp under the rear seats of course the boot floor esp in the corners are very prone

I wouldn't get too hung up on the originality of it !

its the same with any car buy a 1 owner rusty shed or buy a 8 owner solid car . the choice is yours

You can source most of the spares as you go along too or do what i did just buy a 205 gti rotten car with the right bits on

usually dimmas were accident damaged cars werent they?

not all of them were gti's either iirc. they were converted and what not.

generally speaking, they are now mostly rotten (and as above) - prime example - Jutties thread.

Not right offs as far as I'm aware, most were done on brand new shells by terry Pankhurst or some with a similar name!

For some reason I thought they were metal wings. Or is that the 306?

That clears that a little.

It's right money, just unsure of condition till I see it.

Some Dimma's were definitely built out of accident damaged cars, although i assume a lot came with the kit as a "factory" build.

One of the original Clio Williams Dimma cars was accident damaged, and from my time as an owner of a Renault 5 GT Turbo back in the late '90's / early '00's, I remember a poster on the RTOC that owned a Dimma kitted R5 that was originally accident damaged before the kit was fitted by Dimma. I think one of the 306 Cabriolet Dimma's was also an accident damaged car before the kit.

Of course they are still totally different to the modern "Dimma" cars which appear to have moved into wide arch kits for the BMW M3 and such like, and a few of those I've seen advertised tend to be Cat D damaged.

The only metal wings I know where the 306 convertible ones well my friend owned them both , just sold one too

I don't know about normal 306 ones

But I've spoke to a few folk who know lots and built some of them ,The info I got they never came with metal wings

The same with the accident damage bit I got told this was an urban myth too by folk in 'the know'

Terry is doing a signature series now and no1 apparently sold for 20 grand

Its like the tt dimma's some went to turbo techniques first and some went to Dimma first

( I should state this is what i have been told by different folk without going back to 1988 ish i will never know )

If it's not got the wheels then you would have to factor in how much the Dimma ones are.

Or go for something different but I guess they will also cost a fair bit.

Trouble with Dimma's is just they don't come up very often and never on your doorstep

I looked for ages for mine and put the word out with some folk too and drew a blank for ages

The wheels you can still get from image for a nice price of course but they still come up second hand from time to time

I'm not sure I want to pay image prices.

Will see what comes along and wether I can talk the mrs into it.

I haven't bought it yet, but may just throw some banded steels on for a while.

image wheels are just replicas as you cannot get the originals anymore any 205 dimma that is being looked at unless you have proof that under the kit its solid then kit would really need to be removed.

There is that. I saw that the body parts are still available from the importer. Even though they are expensive I expect you could put them on a regular car for around the same price as an original and good condition Dimma. I guess you wouldn't have the history though!

dimma will sell you a complete kit but they have to fit it and st performance will only sell panels for restoration work not sure they would sell you all parts seperate to build a new one up.
