Digital Clock - Illumination

The digital clock is fine until I switch the lights on, then there is no display. (I know it's still there but not lit at all)

 

I understand it should dim, is this time for a new clock or am I missing something as I tried another one I have and it does the same thing.

Have you got the dimmer rheostat connected under the steering column? If so does the speedo/tacho backlight illuminate when you turn the headlights on?
