Prices All Over The Place

Recommended Posts

Is it just me or are 205 prices a bit all over the place? Seem to be a few cheap cars around currently having not seen anything decent for months. Over-inflated market in the summer with the 30th anniversary or is this just a dip?

The prospect of viewing a high mileage, but MOTd car for £1300 has got me thinking (not that I need another 205!)

I've always thought that £1000-2000 is really the maximum anyone should spend on a 205 GTi aside from the obvious notable exception. But then again, I am a cheap skate!

They're always all over the place IMO. Redonculously priced restored cars, sensibly priced original cars and modified pieces of s*it that the owners expect to get all the money they've spent back on!

Someone will spend what someone thinks it's worth. £1k isn't a great deal of money by today's standards (no, I'm not minted!) but I would happily spend 3k, 4k or 5k on a good 205 gti.

Why isn't a 205 ever worth any more than £1-2k?

I think the prices are on the up, you might have been able to buy a nice tidy car 4-5 years ago for 1-2k, but i bet nowadays a comparable car is 2.5/3k-ish...

Imagine what they'll be like in another 5 years, 5-6k maybe?

Having been in the market a year ago I doubt very much you can get anything even approaching tidy for 1k.

I'd say for a decent one these days needing little work you're talking 3500-4000 like scott bartons on here.

In 5 years time I wouldn't be suprised if decent cars were 7-8k.

I disagree!

I know you can get a tidy car for under 1k - you need to shop around and be prepared to do some dirty work!

I'm not saying a 205 isn't 'worth' more than 2k, in my head, for what they are; they should be worth double that. What I'm getting at is what they sell for, the average tidy 205 simply doesn't sell for 3-4k, if they did - people wouldn't be breaking them.

There's some obvious exceptions and my statement isn't an exact science but I've seen very tidy cars go for 1-2 thousand pounds recently. But in answer to another comment about not being able to get anything tidy for that sort of money, it come down to what your view of tidy is, my standards are pretty low, if the vehicle starts, stops and isn't rotten; it's tidy. These cars are over two decades old and as such, taking into account the elements they are subjected to, you can be pretty sure that even those for sale at £4k are hiding the beginnings of some superficial rust behind the valance or in a hard to reach place that nobody knew was there in the engine bay etc.

My £500 STDT isn't rotten, it's got a little rust here and there, it stops well and drives very well, the paintwork isn't great but I would call it tidy, same for my £400 GTi I bought this year...... I guess it comes down to what you expect from an old car but personally I'd sooner pay £500 for a solid example that I can pay £1-2k over time doing it up knowing it's done rather than pay 3-4k for a car that may have been restored 3-4 years ago but could be unproven when it comes to an Achilles Heel here or there.

The thing is, they are an emerging classic now, and are attracting a new type of buyer. The values of classic cars don't neccesarily follow any tangible reasoning.

Second that Rob!

I've been involved in the classic car game from the sensible to the truly ridiculous for over 20 years and never seen values doing what they're doing right now.
