Alternator Light

my 1985 1.6 gti intermittently has the battery light coming on but is quite dim, checked the wiring and charge rate and all seems ok both under load and without any load, has anyone else had this problem? Is it just a case of replacing the alternator or am I missing something? Thanks

Brushes or the slip rings on the way out .. check before it fails to charge the battery .
