Can anyone identify the silver thing in the bottom right and what's its purpose?

I believe it has something to do with the fans etc as pretty sure the one on my gti6 was clipped to the fan cowling,

Reason I ask is that I'm trying to sort out the mess of looms that came with my car

Right I've found out its a cooling fan resistor (I think). The issue I have is I'm testing the wiring before I fit it into the car and I have no dash lights (could have parts missing as its been chopped about a fair bit) and I found with the sidelights on my headlights would come on really dim whereas they should be off. I then found this resistor was getting very hot so unplugged it and my lights seemed ok

205 use a dim dip system which is one of those cylindrical silver items. The headlights come on dimly with the sidelight bulbs. The heat will be the resistor getting warm. I don't run the dim dip and just rely on the sidelight bulbs.

Oh ok I assumed there was a issue with the lights. So that silver thing (not my pic just one I found on Google) is probably tied into the lights then lol well I'll just run sidelight bulbs as that was hot enough not to hold after probably 5 mins on

Yes as above it is the dim dip resistor, it looks similar to the fan resistor. It's meant to get hot!
