Contemplating A Winter Diesel...

Recommended Posts

artois7

Hi all,

As my 205 is off the road for the winter, I'm driving a beat up old Hyundai Coupe at the moment. It's got about 113k miles on it and is going well enough, apart from being hideously slow and eating/leaking coolant & oil. I top it up every other day and keep on top of it, have had no problems so far.

I drive it approx 300 miles per week, 200 of which being a trip to Birmingham there and back. This is paid for as it's on work time, so it's 193.3 miles at 40p per mile = £77.60 per week. A full tank costs approx £55 and will cover 350 miles, so I gain near a half tank and £20 profit each week for the run. This is approx 32MPG.

Considering selling this on and picking up a diesel. I don't know how well and for how long the Coupe will cope with the 300 miles per week, and I figure that a cheap diesel (<£500) if it will acheive 45MPG minimum, will certainly make a difference.

Ideally looking for a 306 diesel. What MPG can be expected from one on a motorway run, and would any of you recommend any other cheap diesels?

50/55mpg on a run. citroen zx you can find cheaper sometimes. my parents had a zx aura from new in 93 and only sold it a few years ago. aside from consumable and service items the only failure was a power steering hose. cracking car.

Used to run a 106 1.5D for a while. Slow as hell, but it would return 60mpg plus at 60mph on the motorway.

The 306 2.0hdi I then ran would still return 50-55pg on the same run. Have to say it was decidedly more comfortable than the 106 as well.

306 HDi's can be cracking value for what they are. As above, comfortable enough for long journeys. Can lug passengers and gear in the boot easily enough, which with a 106 would be trickier.

IMO, for the buttons they cost they look like a lot more car being a ph3 with a reasonably smart look.

I bought a 306 HDi last year for similar reasons. It now runs a Stage 1+ map and still returns 50mpg consistently. A recent run to AllenAllans place up north showed 56mpg and that was with an engine/suspension/SD Challenge cage in the back & not hanging about!

If you do opt for a 306HDi, get the last of the line ones as they've got the cheaper tax. Don't expect the A/C to work though!

I've got a mk1 Audi A3 1.9 tdi. It was cheap to buy, returns over 55mpg on mixed driving (60 on motorways), has a good spec and was cheap. I expect the mk4 golf, seat Leon will be similar. Worth considering as you can get them for the price of some 306s

another 306 HDI vote, had mine 2 years now, it paid for itself in reliability and diesel in about 2 months! also appears to be the self-healing edition as the crank seal leak has stopped by itself.

try and get the 3dr HDI DTurbo, basically gti6 looks and feel inside.

When you say HDI D turbo, I thought HDI and D turbo were different things?

This is what I was looking at as it's down the road, although he had it up on ebay before asking for £350 buy it now, and then relisted it with the bids up at £400 already. I've messaged him to contact me when the winner of the auction inevitably messes him around. Gotta love ebay.

(Just realised that no ebay links are allowed, but as I'm not selling anything this shouldn't be a problem, right?)

The Ebay link would be the old XUD engine

I have a 2003 307 90 HDI for approaching 8 years and it is brilliant. They are quite cheap too if your budget stretchs. Quite a lot have relatively low miles on too if you look around. Mine has just turned 80k

It's a bit of a funny one with 'dturbo' as it's a trim level as well as the engine type.

Hdi 'dturbo' is a trim level

where as a dturbo (phase 2 for example) is an xud

A remap works wonders on them. Night and day difference in performance and drive!

I think the HDi DTurbo also gets better suspension from the GTi6.

Agreed on the Remap

Got a "stage 1+" goes like stink compared to what it used to. Still good on fuel

Interesting on the remap. The above 306 was about £200 too rich for me, used to see them pop up for £350 all the time so I'll be keeping an eye out. Diesel round here is down to £1.24 per litre so hardly makes sense to have a petrol workhorse!

Was getting it re-mapped on Sat but a 205 drop off meant I had to put it back, Bloody ferries and or weather. Need to blank the EGR off too

Check the bottom pulley as well, Like all 306 ones they tend to fall aparts

I was contemplating a 306 diesel estate recently as well for a winter runabout and being big enough to sling mountain bikes in. Then I went slightly mad and bought this today:

I made a similar choice when my c2 was written off. I bought a £550 xsara 2.0 90bhp hdi. It was on 80k ish when I bought it, just ticked over 105k. It does 55mpg everywhere. I have spent out about £300 on new bits for it, including a new carpet, clutch, 2x ball joints, wishbone bushes, gearbox seals, genuine driveshafts, sump, full service, set of pe2's, brake disks and pads and 1 driveshaft cv boot.

It paid for itself, insurance and all the work done to in by using it in place of my 205 over that period!

Recently bought a tow bar for it too but havent fitted it yet
