Oil Pressure And Stop Light

Recommended Posts

woodymi16

Out for a drive today and the red stop light cam on although it was quite dim and the dash oil pressure gauge was reading zero but my Stack oil pressure gauge was reading normal pressure.

Readings from the Stack gauge where

1.5 bar at idle hot

3.0 bar at 3k revs

The oil pressure is rising as normal as the revs rise

My first thought was the oil pump has expired but the Stack gauge is telling me otherwise.

I would be grateful for any help on this one.

Bad electrical wiring to the standard sensors would be my suggestion.

I'd trust the Stack gauge and not worry about the oil pressure. The dim stop light might be due to a wire shorting to earth so you need to follow the wiring from the oil pressure switch to the brown multiplug above the gearbox to check for damage.

I had a similar problem when I bought mine a year ago, came on now and again for a few weeks then stayed on. Replaced the sensor and had no problems since - might be worth buying a new one as was only about £5-10 from memory.

Will a faulty pressure gauge also put the stop light on, the gauge is moving now but not in line with the stack gauge and is there a way of testing the oil pressure switch, as the red light on the oil pressure gauge does not come on when I put the ignition to on.

The gauge and light are totally separate, only the switch can put the stop light on. The light should come on with the ignition on and engine not running because there is no oil pressure and the switch is closed.

Someone on here tested switches and senders by attaching them to a foot pump with a PSI gauge using some rubber hose and jubilee rings IIRC.

I have ordered a pressure switch and will fit it tomorrow.

To add to the confusion when I'm driving and turn the steering left @ 1/4 turn all the gauges go off, not the speedo and Rev counter.

I disconnected the fuel sender but it still does it and only when moving which is making the fault a little difficult to trace.

I'm thinking a short some where.

Check the brown multiplugs in the drivers footwell aren't touching the steering column and getting pulled around as you turn.

Otherwise, it's likely a wiring/connector issue somewhere that's getting moved around as you drive.

Such faults can be a headache to trace, but wiggling bunches of wiring whilst seeing if the gauges drop out should find the approximate location of the issue.

Found the fault, had a burnt out part of a track on the back of the dash,

repaired using a wire to link out the burnt track, so far seems it seems to have worked.

That's an odd one! I guess the whole binnacle was flexing slightly when you were turning the steering wheel left.
