Spongy Gear Change

Recommended Posts

Hi there

I have a 205 GTI 1.9 phase 1.5 with reverse over to the top left... not sure what code this is? I use it only on track days.

Its pretty spongy - I am guessing its worn linkages (around 116,000 miles).

Would it benefit from a gear box oil change?

How easy are the linkages to replace?

Thanks in advance

Lift up reverse by first is BE1.

It's easy enough to change the linkages and uprated ones are available from Miles on here for example. However the first thing to do is check the L shaped arm and the balljoint for the linkages are tightly bolted to the subframe as they tend to loosen over time. There are also some plastic washers on the gearstick and on the L shaped arm that can wear out.

Gear oil is worth changing if you don't know when it was last done, make sure you use Total BV or another oil specifically for Peugeot boxes.

Thanks Jack, Haynes isn't much use, I don't suppose there is a handy diagram of all components somewhere?

To confirm the linkage's if worn pop off more than anything, and the ball joint on the Subframe is the worst place for a sloppy change, Gear oil must be a BV 75/80
