Alternative Options For Driving Lamps - Don't Say Denji's

Recommended Posts

johnhenry

Im looking at options for other driving lamps as my denji's are rotten already after a whopping 4000 miles of road use...

Seim stuff leaves me a bit cold, mainly due to pricing,

are there any good alternatives, good quality, good beam pattern, that aren't seem money, but are denji quality?

Lucas square 8's came to mind, but they're pretty big.

I have a set of yellow lens Cibie's that are for a 306 in the garage, but I'm 90% their fog lamp beam pattern

Cheers

John

What has gone rotten? If its the surrounds this is well documented that the finish they are supplied in is not up to the job. The reflectors etc I have found to be OK personally.

surrounds are gone yeah, now a beautiful brown rust edging to the glass, makes it look really tatty at the front. I know, you get what you buy, they were bought purely to have some driving lights there, reflectors are okay

plus the beam pattern isn't amazing, it'll do. Just wondered that all :)

I sandblasted the Denji frames, had them zinc plated, then powdercoated black. Then fitted them with a pair of the plastic driving lamp protectors. They look good and hopefully will last a long time.

I've got the Ring microline driving lights. They're a bit smaller than the originals but have lasted for years and years. I've only had to clean up and hammerite the surrounds once. Mine was a daily driver so I guess they've done 50k+. The beam pattern is decent and they're nice and bright, and for £25 they're cheap.

I've got a pair of Cibies. Certain Mk1 106s and 306s had spot lamps rather than fogs, and I managed to pick up a pair of new ones on ebay a few years back. They're a little bigger that the original 205s lamps, but the cutouts for the 205 lamps look like they were made for the Cibies.

First two are driving lamps.

The end picture is a fog lamp.

Will be selling my fog pair shortly.

The problem with the Cibies, and i used to have a pair on my 205, is that they have a curved edge on either side which means they don't fit in the bumper recess very well and end up facing too far downward without modifying the brackets. Also i believe that only the 106 got the spotlamp version (as well as the fog), can still get them new for about £65 each, ZX's and ph1 306's only got the fog version.

I have a pair of the Cibies on one of my 205's, to be honest I don't find any of the driving lamps provide that much extra light anyway, so for me its more a case of having something to fill the holes in the front valance than anything else. As said they have curved sides as opposed to the rectangle shape of the "proper" 205 lights so the purist nazis will gurn at you for them not being correct, but in terms of something to fill the holes and look like driving lamps they are fine!

This is what I have. The lens is completely flat and clear.

I didn't have a problem with the curved sides. I did have to trim the small breather pipe on the back though.

You can find a set of Cibies for 80 usd on ebay (a pair with covers) either in yellow fog or spot version. They claim to be original and made in France but comming from denjilight in Taiwan so they might be questionable...
