Making New Custom Pipes For The Remote Oil Filter- What Fittings!?

Recommended Posts

cRaig

Hi there

Due to lack of pug availability, I'm considering making new pipes to supply the remote oil filter/ oil-water exchanger. I'm in the process of trying to work out the best/neatest way to do this, with regards to what fittings to use. I was hoping that goodridge, or similar would supply a suitable hose fitting, but I'm suspecting some kind of adaptor is required.

Both ends of the hoses are male, O-ring seal, and seem to be quite an unusal size for Pug.

I have had a go at measuring it, initially I thought it was M22 x1.5, but on closer inspection it seems to be a much more unusual size for Pug! I make it a 18tpi thread with i diameter of 21.8 across the threads. which is approximately 7/8ths I think? (indeed, Ive just noticed 18 is stamped onto the fitting, which confirms some of my suspicions..)

I was wondering if people with more experience of hydraulic fittings thought the best/ most efficient solution to make up a pair of hoses. One end has a 90degree male fitting, the other is straight. All have to be O ring seal, rather than JIC etc.

Could it be 17tpi? That's about what m22x1.5 is and would make sense.

I checked with my (admittedly limited) selection of pitch gauges, and the metric 1.5 gauge is close, but not entirely convincing. The 18tpi gauge is a much better fit. Which is what has confused me!

the hose fittings that are 7/8" UNF I can find are 14 tpi.

Indeed, which is why I'm quite confused now! :D I guess i should invest in a larger thread gauge and go from there really..

The fittings are imperial, and are actually the same size and threads as are normally used for automotive air conditioning hoses. 7/8-18tpi would be correct for that size.

Horrible old weird Peugeot s*ite, buy a take off plate and remote housings with conventional thread sizes then hoses are easy.

But Ive spent ages tracking down the various parts of the pug setup, I don't want to give up with it now! :D (although I do agree, sourcing and fitting the mocal plate, thermostat and cooler to the midget took approximately 100th of the time!)

Thanks for the info- I will see about finding some air conditoning pipe fittings (or someone who makes the pipes!) thanks for the lead, should make it alot easier :)

Just need to try and find a supplier of something suitable now! I may try pirtec, as I understand they do some aircon hoses, although it might be a bit too specific for them, I'm not sure.

A decent hydraulics/fittings place could repair yours or at least mod some new fittings onto the original ends.

Mm, Ive been to a couple of hydraulic places, and they havent been able to offer many suggestions- the most helpful suggested cutting off the outer ferrule, remove the pipe, and clamp the inner barb with new hose and a jubilee clip, which would work. Its just two of the fittings are siezed solid, so would be nice to replace them, if Im going to that sort of trouble.

Ive found the right sort of fittings now 'beadlock' seems to bring up the right part, just need to find a decent uk supplier, as I dont want to spend a fortune on postage, and then need someone to crimp them.

I bought some a/c fittings from acpg.co.uk a few years ago. You have to phone them though as their website is awful and hasn't been updated for at least 5 years.
