Some Years Seem Rusty

Recommended Posts

Reebmit

Do certain years seem to rust more than others. Sounds silly but quite often I see late (K & L reg) pugs full of rust, normally Miami blue ones. Most of mine are F & G reg and are almost totally rust free..... I know the very early ones have potential issues due to not being treated etc.... Did later years use different grades of steel etc......??? :)

Yes, it's fairly well documented on here that GENERALLY 1989/90 cars are less rust prone

My F reg had nothing more than minor surface rust on the front headlamp panel - my K plate however was more rusty than any other car I had owned.

As above, my '89 red one is solid as a rock, the '90 silver one has had a patch on the n/s inner wing but thats it :)

My 89 red was really solid. After having it dipped, only needed very minor repairs which took less than a few hours. Don't know about any others years as this is my first.

Both my F plate GTi and Xs were completely rust free and so was my 1.6 H even though it spent most of its early life by the sea in Broadstairs.

My white K was fairly clean with a tiny amount of rust on one of the inner wings. My current green K was fairly rusty until it spent a couple of months with Paintguy in sheffield.

My H 309 is a totally different story with rust showing up all over....

Interesting, thanks guys, good bit of feedback, does seem the 'F/G' platers are less prone to rust. Would be good to get some feedback on the very earliest ones....... could be change of material suppliers to Peugeot back in the day....

I know that back around 10-12 years ago manufacturers started really trying to beat cost out of components, which is why most cars of that era and newer now only seem to last around 10 years before bits start breaking and costing money to keep going and in most cases just get scrapped. This could well be a factor in this.....could have been poor recycled steel.....just a thought

first few years did not get the galvanising the mid production cars did, and late cars were made in a different factory afaik so a different source of steel I would imagine.

Interesting, that would tie up with my thoughts, thanks Mei. Most manufacturers started sourcing parts from Poland and the like so yes later cars could potentially be worse....

Mine is a J and I'd say it was average to good. Boot floor had two patches above the strengthening ribs, front inner arch/wing under the jack was rusted through. And there was a patch on the front panel on the lip (drivers side)

My D has one section of rust on the driver's side outer sill which would have taken 10 minutes to weld a patch into, but rather an idiot used filler.

The rest of the car is absolutely solid with nothing more than surface rust showing up anywhere. It lives outside as well.

Paint and build quality best on g/h.

WAs this when sales were at their highest?

After that they were on their way to being phased out.

Some interesting feedback, would be good to investigate further, as you say Simon wonder if sales numbers also had an input, I think as Mei said it was probably a move to different factory and the potential need to beat cost out!!!!
