Side Repeaters Again.

Recommended Posts

Rolando

hello all, i got some new wings for my cti and they haven’t got any side repeater wholes as most of you know. now I wasn’t too fussed about drilling the wholes out etc but I've noticed some 205's never came with side repeaters as standard? and been looking on here and its growing on me not having them.

my question is do i need side repeaters in my wings? my CTI is a February 1987 registered phase 1.

the original wings came side repeaters but I think my CTI is change over year as it had the old dash but the new (phase1./2) wishbones/ ARB unless someone changed that in its lifetime.

any help would be great. thanks

Yes you do need them, I got away with it for 3 or 4 MOTs on a J plate but they eventually noticed.

Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1986 must be fitted with one side repeater indicator

If registered on or after 1st April 1986 you will need side repeaters for MOT.

Unless.......

"Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1986 must be fitted with one side repeater indicator on each side. Instead of a separate lamp, the side repeater might be part of the front direction indicator if it includes a wraparound lens.

Lamps incorporating a side repeater are marked either with an ‘E’ mark in a circle or an ‘e’ mark in a rectangle above which is a number 5.

However, some vehicles are fitted with a wraparound lens with no European approval markings. These can be tested by standing approximately 1000mm to the side of the vehicle’s rear bumper with the indicator on. If amber light can be seen coming through the front lens (not a reflection) this is acceptable."

So, presumably, if you get the front indicators from a pre 1986 model they will have the necessary E marking to allow you to run without side repeaters...............but prepare yourself for an argument with any MOT tester about it aswell as hassle from over enthusiastic police officers. I'm not sure its worth it.

Interesting. Although pre 1986 wouldn't have needed to be E marked would they, as side repeaters weren't needed?

That did occur to me later on, it is a valid point that there is likely no 205 front indicator with the relevant marking, my mistake.

Just been and checked. 205s have e2 on them, both in a rectangle and in a circle. Any good?

Surely the bit about being able to see direct light from behind rules out a 205 indicator. The internal diffuser is orientated facing directly forward on the direction of travel .

If it has the correct E-markings, that part doesn't apply - the direct light only applies to non E-marked lenses bizarrely.

Friend of mine used to have to use this ruling come MOT time on the 306 Maxi replica he had which didn't have side repeaters but did have correctly E-marked front indicators. Didn't half cause him some grief sometimes with MOT testers who didn't know the rules (or worse still, refused to check) though, and I think in the end he got so sick of the argument every year that he resorted to adding stick-on side repeaters for the MOT test and removing them again once it passed.

To be honest it was a bit silly, as whilst correctly E-marked and thus acceptable in the eyes of VOSA, you couldn't see any indication from the side of the car.
