B Plate Gti 1.6 - Rarity?

Recommended Posts

forbeslongden

Hey fellas,

I've noticed that a 1985 B plate GTi 1.6 is up for sale currently and it's in danger of being broken up, how rare are these? I'd assume that is the first prefix they were commonly found on?

The car looks to be in really good condition bodywork wise, it's in white but is not really original in the sense that the Phase two clusters and interior have been fitted plus an MI16 engine and box as well. The windscreen I think he is replacing, and the trim is meant to be there too.

The guy is looking for £1500 for it, what's your views ?1208935_10202976898966567_72631242422572

A good solid shell must be worth £500+ on it's own so it could be worth it. Sourcing all the bits and the time to get it original would be expensive though.

The problem is, he's selling it with a solid Steel Grey shell thrown in, I'm not keen on taking a rolling shell on as well since there's no where for me to put it plus I'd have to send a flatbed up for it and it won't fit two on it, I wonder why so much effort was put into making it look like a phase 2 car when they can just be bought easily enough.

Have you made it your lifes mission to own every "rare" 205 going or to have the oldest 205 ever made or what?

No, no; there is a trend to the 205's that I buy and that's usually ones that may fall into dubious hands i.e the scrapman. I enjoy an unusual one as much as the next 205 fan, this one struck me since I haven't seen a B plate one for some time and it's future seems somewhat in doubt.

Certainly not worth a life mission but I like to try and help the occasional 205 out. To be fair, every 205 is heading towards being rare since they'll be in terminal decline before long, I'd be hunting a 1FM or Automatic GTi if I were looking for particular models, in an ideal world, there'd be an abundance of them left on the road but those days are never coming back.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I'm tired of seeing a 205 breaking for bits because some knobber put £3K into it with pointless add-ons knowing full well it'd never make anywhere near that back and deciding to just break it up instead of just accepting a car usually makes a loss.

Haha!! No, it's an '85 GTI.

Not very original, I grant you, but a GTI none the less.

I thought it may have been a retrospective plate since those can go backwards can't they. There was an M plate STDT that belonged to a guy who was banned on here, he blew the gasket though.

When did anyone last see an A-reg GTI? I remember the one we had on Motor magazine was A706 VGT but it's long gone.

My mates got 4 of them, One of those might be broken up even thou the body is Mint and I mean mint, But it's had cage mounts fitted in it again and most of the inside is missing

The problem with early ones was that they were not fully galvanised like the C plate onwards ones, hence didn't last as long.

Recently rebuilt the engine and replaced all the brake pipes and brakes and exhaust

Body work needs attention but solid underneath

I think they are more rare but not massively rare

not sure what mine is worth?

mine also has the very 1st clocks on it, i have never seen them before

erbs yours has the early switchgear too which is square and from a 305. Later phase 1 205's had round switchgear.

My 87 phase 1 cti had that square type switch gear, thought all phase 1's were like that. Didn't the first gti's have the same gear knob as the talbot samba (which was similar to the 205 t16 gearknob)? Which that instrument panel is possibly also from.

One thing I do notice about that white 1.6 is the interior seems to be Phase 1.5 or later, no Phase 1 stuff is there anymore.... Either way, £1,500 is too much to ask for a car that isn't original.
