My New Gti 1.6

Recommended Posts

I had gotten the approval from the wife for a "new" car, and had been searching for a while for a few different vehicles, among them of course was a GTI. I has seen a few vehicles nearby, but they were either too espensive for their condition, or too beat up. I wanted something in very good shape. I lucked out when I found this GTI, for sale in the Netherlands. It was a five hour drive away from my home in northern Bavaria, but something I could do on a weekend. The price agreed on was good for a car in this condition. The seller and his father are Peugeot mechanics and lovers, own over 5 Peugeots in the household. They buy and restore cars, and this 205 was their latest.

The car is a 1988 205 GTI 1.6 in red. The car has the factory cloth interior, sunroof and power steering. Cosmetically the car is near perfect: new paint (not a single dent or scratch), new head and tail lights, new turn signals, driving lights have unrusted frames, the wheels have been stripped and re-painted, all glass is scratch and chip free. Mechanically it is very good too. The engine has over 120,000 km, but hasn't been rebuilt. Seals have been replaced, a few new hoses, new betls, a tune up, new plugs, etc. It starts and idle easily, ran perfectly on the way home. The rear bem has been completely rebuilt, new bushings on front suspension, new shocks, new tires. The only minor problem was the old dipstick allowed oil to leak through the filler tube, coating my engine with oil. When I had the car inspected this morning the only thing it failed for was the oil leak. I had the same problem on my CTI 1.6 before, and it was easily fixed with a new dipstick. For the moment the GTI is wearing the CTI's dipstick, and I'll order another one again for the CTI. Now I just need to clean the engine from its coat of oil, then get the car re-inspected.

She looks great if a little high at the back. Perhaps the beam needs lowering back to the standard ride height?

Good purchase!

@stufarri, yes I think the rear end is riding a bit high. It did feel a bit soft on the highway, perhaps because it is so high. Beign that the rear beam has been rebuilt I imagine there won't be too much rust whem I go to lower it.

@2-pugs I wish that was my house! That is actually the seller's home in the Netherlands. The home had an amazing barn/garage with two car lifts and loads of room for wrenching and car storage. I was jealous too!

Well the inspector apparently found a bit of an oil leak that might not be coming from the engine. Perhaps driveshaft output seals. How much of a work is it to replace those seals? I imagine remove both driveshafts and they can be easily replaced, right?

Went by my Pug dealer and got the two driveshaft output seals, 21 Euro for both, they had them in stock. The master mechanic at the dealer came out to see the car, he was like a little kid seeing the GTI. He also pointed towards the gearbox cover as a possible point of leaking, so I'll be doing that too.

And if you'd like to know and read more about the acquisition of the 205 GTI please click on the link: http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/i-bought-a-french-firecracker-1642486685 The piece is written for a North American audience with little to no exposure to the 205 GTI.
