One Problem Fixed Now Another To Tackle!

Recommended Posts

Just managed to fit the starter dowel that was missing that Anthony kindly sent me, that fixed the dodgy starting and strange noises, but now I have another problem...when refitting the starter I drained all the coolant and removed rad. I've just put everything back together topped the coolant back up bled it for a good 10mins topped up when necessary etc and my fan came on but wouldn't turn itself of also the heater would only blow cold air. Prior to draining the coolant and removing rad all seemed ok, the heater blew hot then anyway. I'm thinking maybe thermostat? This sound right or could it still be air locked? Track days fast approaching and this cars never going to be ready!

Also the top hose seemed hot, hotter than normal anyway.

Air locked I'd say - GTi-6's can be a pain to bleed properly.

If it was the thermostat I would expect the top hose to stay cool and the temperature to sky-rocket. The fact the hose is hot and the rad fan coming on suggests the 'stat is at least opening.

Glad that the starter dowel fixed the issues though :)

Maybe ten mins wasn't enough then, any tips for bleeding other than the usual rad cap off?

You'll need the bleed screws open for certain until coolant runs through with no bubbles - usually lots of air comes out of a '6 engine!

Most older XU's will self-bleed with the rad cap off, but GTi-6's (and I assume 1.8/2.0 16v lumps that are the same basic design) won't.

Thanks, I'll try that tomorrow, never even noticed the bleed screw on the thermo housing!

Have you temperature up high in the car aswell to circulate coolant around the matrix.

On a 205 the heater matrix always has flow no matter if the heater is on hot or cold.
