309 Gti Shafts Into 406 Hubs?

Are they a direct fit or are the outer cv's bigger on a 406?

 

Anyone know?

Yeah that's the plan, I'm building tubular bottom arms just like the satchell kit.

 

I've got a few ideas kicking about.

You'll need longer shafts unless you're moving the top mounts

I don't think I necessarily will, I can make them to suit my 309 shaft size.

 

But i'll need to take some measurements to confirm.

You'll see when you try them. If you fit a 406 hub straight to your existing damper/top mount to get useable camber the wishbone and shaft need to be 20mm+ longer

I'm not disputing that, I haven't measured.

 

But are 309 arms not 20mm longer than std 205?

 

Or do you mean they need to be 20mm longer than 309 arms.

 

The black 205 which I robbed the pics from doesn't look far out if at all on camber?

That's because the wishbones are longer on the one you've pictured?

 

I meant roughly 20mm, I can't remember the exact measurements. It doesn't matter how much longer a 309 arm is anyway as they won't fit and it's irrelevant. 309 shafts are 10mm longer than 205 shafts so they won't work I'm afraid.

 

Correct driveshaft length is pretty critical but I'd work on getting everything else sorted then make up your shafts afterwards.

only 10mm per side on the wishbones and the shafts. (205 to 309)

 

Sarty ran a Satchell setup and had custom shafts, his C5 wheels sat flush with the arches with the chunky R888's,

 

TBH, given all the work Colin and Dave have put into the suspension on a 205, I'd just pay up and know its going to work straight off.

 

 

its not as simple as just using different hubs either.

I agree.

 

But everything is simple as with regard to the subframe and arms pictured.

its not "just a subframe and arms"

 

the width and castor angle as well as lower pivot location have all been taken into consideration, also quite possibly the steering rack location... it certainly wasn't standard on Sarty's 205 which had a very similar arrangement.

Would 306 shafts not be a better option? More readily available. Or even 406 shafts if they give you a bit extra 'length'.... ;-)

Obviously allanallen and welshpug have valid points, but I've thought about this before and would look at the 307 hubs....'Similar' lower mount to the 406, but uses a 2 bolt mount to the strut which would allow easy change to camber bolts for adjustment.

yeah thought about them but it means new struts too.

Well, that's true, but given the level of modification you're looking at, what's the cost of a pair of struts if it makes your overall set-up 'right'?

 

My thoughts on the 307 hubs/struts would be that you could set your top mounts to maximise caster, and then use the hubs to manage the camber....A little bit more flexible than doing it all via the top mounts.

 

You could sell your current struts to offset maybe 40% of the cost.

 

All this is hypothetical....I've never pulled together all the bits to check this.

Sure, what ever floats your boat. From memory, 306 and 405 lengths are the same. Either option is better than lengthening and gives more than enough increase in camber and track width.

On 307 hubs, you can reuse your brakes; the 406 brakes have a different distance between the mounting holes. (at least the HDI ones do).

406 hubs are all the same as well as late 405's, indeed the radius of the caliper mounting lugs is larger.
