Swapping 1.0 Carb To Vtr Engine - Wiring

Recommended Posts

MikeAuto

I'm thinking of changing the engine in my XE for a Saxo VTR engine. I've searched on the forum and I'm happy enough with the mechanical side of things, but the wiring isnt covered too well in other topics.

I'm planning on buying a complete VTR (MoT failure or similar) and selling off what I dont use from the conversion. My main question is is there much difference in the wiring between a 1-plug and 3-plug car? Would a 1-plug be easier, or will it make no difference as I'm starting with a carb-fed car?

( I realise swapping in another carb engine would be much easier all round...)

1 Plug will be easier, as the instruments will work, 3 plug is partial multiplex and the coolant gauge and fans are controlled through a single sender via the ecu.

Imo if youre going to put a heavy lump like a 90bhp tu5 in I would be looking to drop in the alloy xu5 which is 115 bhp and stronger gearbox.

Cheers for the answer!

Whats the weight difference between a TU9 from a 205 and a TU5 from a Saxo?

I too am finally venturing into this conversion and would like some help with wiring. Has anyone that has done this conversion with either a single or 3 plug loom got any advise or help?

As per the OP I plan on buying a complete VTR. Not interested in 16v.

There seems to be alot of late model VTR's ready to buy but I understand the wiring is more complex. Anyone able to explain how different these are to wire up to a 205 rather than an early model single plug, particularly with the clocks?

You will need injection clocks for the rev counter, I was lucky as my old gtx was single point as standard. Nothing wrong with the vtr engine mine was a lot of fun. If you fit an cu5 you have to deal with the old jetronic injection, where as I imagine you want a multipoint tu engine for reliability and a nice increase in power but nothing crazy.

Saying that tu3s block with xsi pistons and tu5 head would be nice

I'm paused midway through fitting a vtr lump. Had to hold the swap due to a house move but hope to continue once garage and workshop are finished.

I think they're a great little conversion apart from the iron block weight.
