The Quest For An Air Con Set Up

Recommended Posts

Atari Boy

I'm trying to understand which cars may offer an air con set up suitable to fit a 205.

Could someone explain which cars might offer the parts required please.

Which 205's had air con fitted in the UK for example, was it just automatics?

What about 309's or Citroens?

Many thanks,

Jonny

My understanding is that aircon was a (very expensive and therefore not very popular) option from 1991 onwards. The jap-spec cars (both GTIs and CTIs) all had aircon as did the 1FMs as standard. According to service box, it wasn't just GTIs that had aircon as an option (it is listed for TU and diesel engines) but I would suspect its even more rare on those cars, and some of the parts, such as the sump wont be compatible anyway.

Full kits do come up for sale from time to time, as do bits and pieces of the setups. With enough research, there are ways and means around alot of the specific parts.

For example.

A/C sump and compressor from a 1.9 mi16 can be fitted, which are much more common and easy to source.

Service items such as receiver dryer can be bought new easily.

Condensors can be bought new http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Air-conditioning-Condensor-Peugeot-205-I-205-I-Cabriolet-205-II-309-I-309-/151358621631?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item233dad47bf

and the twin fan setup is the same as the diesel setup.

The heater box can be modified to take the evaporator, rather than replacing the whole heater box. (the evaporator is still not an easy part to find, though)

Then its just mainly a case of "minor bits" such as the switch, wiring loom, and pipework, and twin crank pulley etc! If you are really keen- all of the cars sold in Australia were fitted with a/c, I have imported a few spares such as evaporators and switches from over there- parts are reasonable, but shipping is expensive!!

One question, was the air con wiring fitted as standard in uk ''88 cars?

As far as I know, very unlikely. My 91 car didn't have any of the A/C wiring fitted as standard (bar the red feed plug for the twin fan wiring)- I think the 205 was too early for 'standard' all-options looms, it was only more recently manufacturers started doing that sort of thing to save money.

Nothing of the AC loom is fitted on any 205, AC Switch is a separate loom, heater controls, Fan and resistor module is different and the loom in the rad fan relay box has 1 different wire then the rest goto the Idle valve, Pressure switch.

If it is any use, i do have an a/c double crank pulley that i could be persuaded to part with, that's one part sourced!

Sorry for the slight hijack but is is easy to fit the 205 AC into a 309? I have the loom for it so I am hoping so.

Gerry on here moved out to Australia from Lancs and may be able to help source the kit, otherwise Aussie Frogs is a great website.

The 309 AC system is pretty much identical to the 205, so it should be a straight fit more or less.

The 205 compressor was always too small for the job anyway. Definitely use the larger 405 version. As said, there's plenty over here. Throw an add on AussieFrogs.
