What Paint Have People Used To Spray The Calipers?

Recommended Posts

m_john_m

I have just bought a set of 306 Gti front brakes for my 205.

While they are off the car i want to spray them red.

Anyone recommend any paint/methods?

Was looking at a heat resistant paint off ebay but i cant see if being very good.

would i need to primer the caliper?

Thanks

John

Most VHT is self priming

I was going to order some hamerite off eBay. Is that better than the stuff you get in find that you have to brush on??

Hammerite is only fit for your garden gate. If you want a good finish that will last there are various two-pack caliper paint kits that will do the best job.

I done my front calipers with brush on stuff. It takes a good while to do cos the shapes etc, and number of coats I put on.

But I did parts of engine with spray type.

I would say there is more chance the brush on stuff will stand the test of time than the spray type.

If you want a top job you should get them blasted and renew the seals etc while you have the chance, which is easy to do if you have access to a small compressor and someone who can sneak them into work for a blasting, ( but you need to make sure everything is bunged good and spotlessly clean when reinserting the pistons.)

I used the red high temperature brush on paint from ebay (this stuff) to do both my front and rear calipers. I was a bit disappointed. After several coats, the colour and finish were excellent, but the paint was incredibly fragile.

I was under the impression it didn't require a primer (says nothing in the instructions), so I was a bit surprised about this.

It didn't adhere to the aluminium rear caliper at all, you could virtually blow it off. The steel fronts were much better, but still very prone to chipping. In the end I removed all of the paint from the rear ones with a wire brush, and left them clean. The fronts I kept painted, but I chipped nearly all of it off reassembling the caliper. I taped up the boots and gave them another coat after assembly.

I'm quite pleased with the end result, but it's nowhere near as good as it could have been, and I still chip another lump off every time I remove a wheel!

Sky, that paint seems very cheap.. Too cheap.

I'm sure my stuff was £20ish and no probs with it.

M-John, that's the stuff I used (gold), and it works well so far. Comes with a tin of brake cleaner iirc.

Takes a while to do... Lots of thin coats, but nice looking end result.

You don't see much of the caliper behind the wheels, the gold is nice IMO, its not bling by any means. Yellow would prob show dust up too much.

I have taken a pic of them but can't upload it as it's too big :( I'll upload some pics tomorrow when I'm in work! Shes had a bit spent on her this week! Just fitted some baker BM oil breathers, just bought these front brakes. And bought a set of wheels with tyres for £77 delivered off eBay! Was cheaper than buying new tyres!

I know there second hand but it was cheaper to buy them...... And I get an extra set of wheels lol need it on the road for as cheap as pos for the moment!
