Problems After Losing Gearbox Oil…..

Recommended Posts

jameswallace.

i lost gear box oil when a bolt fell out whilst driving.

I've since replaced this bolt and and replaced the gear box oil.

All gears work fine but I'm struggling to get into 1st and 2nd and sometimes 3rd and 4th. and when i put the clutch down it makes a horrible squeak! and reverse always grinds now

does this all equal new gear box? or is it clutch related?

Check bolts between engine and gearbox are all there and tight.

Exactly right Tom thanks for that! No idea how they have come loose though? They were torqued up

It's not unusual for them to loosen themselves, you need to spanner check them regularly.

It's not an uncommon thing. Take them out one at a time, degrease the thread and bolt with solvent, then apply loctite and torque back up.

Make sure dowells are present between gearbox and engine - if missing, it makes the loosening bolt problem much worse.

thanks guys!. new problem now...... i guess could be related?

When turning right hard i.e roundabouts and sharp corners at speed. i get a horrible clicking/grinding noise.

My first thought was drive shaft? but these were new only a few hundred miles ago?

also if i try to put my clutch down at this point around a corner then it makes a horrible grinding whine and it wont actually let me put my foot down. the harder i push the worse the sound gets and its super heavy!

Could this be diff related? it doesnt really make sense to me?

Have you checked that all the gearbox bolts are tight yet? Especially the rear lower one that goes from the engine into the gearbox near the diff.

If they're coming loose, particularly that lower one, you'll get all manner of issues related to the clutch until eventually the gearbox completely separates from the engine block.

As above, the grinding noise when pressing the clutch sounds like the tin flywheel shield being pushed into the back of the flywheel as the box flexes and moves away from the engine.
