Removing Mi16 Dizzy Drive Flange...

Hi all,

 

In sympathy with the cambelt side both my camshaft end seals appear to be leaking. I changed the rear one no problem. I removed the dizzy cap and rotor arm from the front one but I couldn't get the torx bolt in the drive flange to budge. I didn't want to force it.

 

Is it a conventional thread? I assume all it is likely to do is turn the engine over or shear? Do I need to stop the engine turning over with a socket on the crankshaft bolt at the same time?

 

Also, assuming I get it off okay am I able to change the camshaft seal as easily at the rear one (i.e. pull it out with a self tapper and press the new one in?)

It's hard to remove insitu. You will need to hold the cam with a spanner (after removing cam cover) and use a quality torx socket. The screw is Loctited in. I use an oxy torch to warm the end of the cam up and make the Loctite go off when out of the engine and in a vice. I'd say it's impossible to do by yourself whilst still in the car. You will need help.

As Peter says you need to hold the cam rather than the crank to keep the timing belt out of the equation.

 

In my experience they vary in difficulty, some undo quite easily and I've even had one come undone by itself in use but equally they can be a bit tricky.

Mine was very difficult to undo, it is a conventional thread though, definitely don't hold the crank bolt - use the flats on the cam as mentioned. Persevere!
