Where To Mount An Oil Cooler?

Recommended Posts

johnnyboy666

Hi,

I've got a TU5J4 engine in my 205, and it has always run with quite a high oil temperature. I think some cars that had this engine as standard also ran an oil cooler, so i'm going to fit one to mine, hoping this will help keep temps under control whilst hooning (and occasionally towing!)

I was originally going to get a tiddly 7 or 9 row oil cooler, and mount it in the slatted bit in the middle of the front valance, but I have changed plans and have ordered a 13row cooler instead, and I'm looking for ideas of where to fit it to get some air flow to it, but not leave it too vulnerable to flying stones and such like.

The car isn't standard, so i'm not fussed about it being totally hidden, and i don't mind chopping bits to make a space for it.

Some photo's would help get the inspirational juices flowing :)

Ignoring the mess on the floor lol and the intercooler, which is mounted to the underside of a crossmember that my oil cooler is mounted on top of.

Its a 10 row and it was limited by the short stainless braided hoses that came with it so this was the only place I could mount it but in the process had to remove the original fan and the entire centre part of the fan shroud so it would fit, then got a nice 10 inch slim fan which is a lot better than the original.

Fits perfect behind the grill, no trimming needed and haven't noticed any unusual running silly hot moments.

Cheers that's quite handy, as I've got short hoses too!

The cooler arrived today, so I've had a little play around, and I think I might end up with something quite similar to yours.

With a bit of chopping of that plastic bit i could get it horizontal here:

Or maybe here, again with a bit of plastic chopping I could get it further to the drivers side, so its not just sat behind the number plate

If you are going to faff about modifying things to fit you might as well get maximum air flow behind the grill.

My number plate covers up my intercooler which restricts airflow, if i remove the plate there's a big difference in acceleration.

This can only be the same for the oil cooler if its hidden behind the number plate area or part hidden behind the bumper.

Them bloody pipes though lol

Very valid point, I'll have to do a bit of trial and error cutting bits of plastic away I think. I could move the number plate over to one side, or cut a a little bit further into the valance towards the drivers side.
