Engine Strip....again, Where To Go From Here!

At a sprint at the weekend and this happened!

I haven't stripped it yet but rings most lightly to be the issue.

The simple thing to do is to replace the rings on the S16 pistons and put it back together......BUT the mind wonders when I have to take it apart again why not fiddle around a bit more while in there.

Its currently running a diesel crank and s16 rods and pistons. So I suppose my question is do I increase the bore (which I might have to do or re line) Can I get standard oversized pistons or am I looking aftermarket ones. Competition wise I can increase to a 2.2 but it will shove me up a class, oh the dilemma!

Bugger, is this the engine we reground the PT81's for? Standard oversize pistons use to be approx. 4x more expensive than aftermarket. So is it already 88 x 86mm?

Hi Peter,

Yeap thats the engine with the pt81's you did. Its currently running 88x86, great power. We were 18th out of 175 cars and second in class on Saturday. I could go 88x88 giving me 2.2 ish if im right but not sure if the increase in cc would give enough of an increase in power to go up in class.

I'd go 88x87 and stay where you are. 87mm is a reliable bore size, easy to get gaskets for etc.

Rings should not fail these days, What sort of Rev's are you using and did you hone the bores before fitting the new ones? You can re-sleeve the blocks but its not the cheapest option
