Stiff Gti6 Throttle

Recommended Posts

Gman

My gti6 engine was fitted by pug racing a number of years ago and the car has always suffered with a stiff throttle cable since. Miles said that many are like that due to the routing of the throttle cable, but I find it very frustrating as it gradually gets worse until the plastic elements of the cable break.

It makes hell toeing also very difficult unless you are standing on the brakes at the time. After driving a standard 205 the other day, it made me realise how frustrating my current throttle is.

By physically pulling the cable without it being connected to the throttle body there is minimal resistance, which suggests the problem actually lies in the throttle body. Now I must admit the TB is quite stiff to turn, not due to seizing or anything like that, but simply that the butterfly valve is heavily sprung.

Has anyone else found this and is there a solution? Hopefully I just have a funny TB and swapping May be the best cure

Many thanks in advance

Graham

Try squirting some Teflon based lubricant down the cable.

My diesel suffers horrendously from a stiff cable, but the problem lies with a crap quality outer cable

Agreed with Paul, I used silicon grease and carefully routed the cable the last time I did a conversion. Seemed to work better after having similar problems.

I will try a bit of lube, but as mentioned, pulling the cable from the throttle body and all seems fine

just man up and save on the cost of new cables all the time... fit throttle bodies.

this really annoys me on my 205 gti. i have a spare complete inlet and have stripped the throttle body. there is two springs on it and one can be removed but only by carefully removing the butterfly flap. not yet tried it on the car though it still seems stiff enough to return it to the stop.

ive been down the new cable and several different routings of the cable.

Interested to see how you get on with this!

removed one spring and it returns to the stop spot on. a lot nicer feel and softer pedal and still stiff enough to rest on part throttle.

406 cable I believe. I've since replaced with a generic pug cable (cut to fit) and the problem still remains.

The mod sounds like a good way to go. Is it a simple removal process, or is it a bit fiddly and can it be refitted easily if it doesn't work on mine?

I'll be following this with interest as mine is suffering the same problem, in my case its probably the £2.99 Wilko's bike brake cable i used :P

the only hard part was removing the 2 brass butterfly screws as they are peened over. i took the ends off with a belt sander then refitted with threadlock. drilling out carefully was the other idea.

take the scientific approach as opposed to brute force as the butterfly is delicate and sharp edges! well woth it in my opinion.
