Bonnet Hinge Problem

Recommended Posts

matty205xs

hi, iv got a problem with both my bonnet hinges as both rear bolts of the hinge have sheared off, yesterday I started drilling out the drivers side bolt and that's fine all that need doing now is to rethread the hole, but the passenger side bolt is difficult to get too as theres a black box with a tube attached to it in the way so I tried to unscrew the bolts holding it on and one of them snapped too  so I decided to leave the other one as I have my suspicions about that one shearing off aswell. can anyone tell me what the black box is for and if u really need it and if so how would I renew the bolts for it, would it be a case of doing what im having to do with the hinges bolts and drill them out and rethread them and put in new bolts, any suggestions would be great.

thanks matt.

Might be better to just weld the bonnet hinges in place? Got a pic of the box with a pipe?

just remove the box for access, its the vacuum accumulator for the sunroof.

you can't "weld the hinges in place"

whats the difference bolted or welded? you can disconnect the bonnet from the hinge if you needed to remove it.

thanks for the quick replies. if I remove the sunroof accumulator how would I replace the screws holding it on? would I have to do the same as I am doing for the hinges (drilling them out and rethreading them)

Give the exposed thread a clean up with a small wire brush then use some decent penetrating fluid (not WD40) on it and it might undo without shearing.

Ideally you want to grind off anything not flush with the surface, drill the rest out then weld a new captive bolt in but the vacuum accumulator is very light and has no moving parts so I'm sure you could improvise something to hold it in place.

So they do, I also have one sheared off on my cti I call the turd, just had a good look at how they work what a nightmare of a design. I take it the original bolts have a shank then for the hinge mount to swivel on? Can you still get them?
