Top End Engine Rebuild

Recommended Posts

matty205xs

hi everyone, im planning on renewing the piston rings, the exhaust valves, and tappets complete with the springs but I cant seem to find the tappet kit with the springs anywhere. does anyone know where I can get the complete set form at a reasonable price also a place where I can get some fairly decent priced piston rings and exhaust valves from aswell would be great if not then what is the going price for these parts.

thanks matt.

When you say tappets, are we talking an 8v TU or a 16v?

so wat would I be having to replace then? so wat are the springs underneath the rocker cover that need adjusting some times?

there's valve springs under there certainly, but no tappets, the rockers act directly from the cam to the top of the valve stem.

right ok so when I replace the exhaust valves ill replace the rocker arms and valve springs? or would the rocker arms be fine as they are as they are about £20 each on ebay and would I need to replace the valve springs aswell when replacing the exhaust valves?

Rockers won't need replacing unless they are bent?

Springs are available from pug for ~£2 each

Genuine valve stem seals are cheap

Why do you want to replace valves?

well the engine sounds tappety and iv been told its probably the exhaust valves either that or he said its just a valvy sounding engine, what do u think?. Also would replacing the piston rings make any difference to the oomph or the power of the car?

thanks.

Tapping can be sorted by setting the adjustable rockers correctly! :)

I'd set the rockers and see what it feels like and go from there

yep iv already had them adjusted by somebody and it made little to no difference as none of them really needed any adjustment. what else can I do?

Ignore the noise and put your foot down! The engine sounded fine to me last time I heard it, perhaps a little tap now and then but it is a 20ish year old engine. I set your rockers as per the haynes manual - the same way I did my own engine which sounds fine.

Have you checked for a cracked/blowing exhaust manifold, this can make a tappy noise.

MikeM, I've always set mine to .2 inlet and .2 exhaust rather than .2 and .4 like the Haynes manual says

ye I know, the car is pretty nippy as it is now but now im trying to get abit more oomph without changing anything like the camshaft so I thought id try and replace some of the things that may have worn over the 20 years like the piston rings and exhaust valves, its probably stupid but u know wat im like I get bored and start looking for things to do on it.

I've always ran 0.15 and 0.35 on my head, never had any tappet/valve lash noise.

Buy my cylinder head :D:P

Unless they are bent I personally wouldn't be changing valves, just re lap them in while it's all apart. Also if it's tappy check for a worn camshaft as even the rockers are set right it will still be noisey. Mine used to tap like mad until I stripped the dizzy and found one of the hammer arms was just rattling around banging on the casing, poss check if it is noisey

right ok thanks for the suggestions, how would I know if the camshaft is worn or would I have to strip apart first to find out?

The rockers aren't as wide as the cam lobes on this type of TU engine so when they wear you can see a clear groove forming on the lobe
